If you're like me, you corner so aggressively that you've worn off the arrows. Now you can mount them either way.

In one of the many previous instances where this exact same question came up either here or on some other cycling forum a poster claims they called up Continental to get the "real" answer from the source. Allegedly the Conti employee told them "It makes absolutely no difference to performance which direction you put the tires on; the reason we put the arrow on is to reduce the number of phonecalls such as this that we'd otherwise have to field."

I ran GP4000s backwards on my Roubaix all winter lol. Absolutely zero issues. My wife rode that bike with them backwards too with no issues. I only noticed that GP4000s had an arrow when I replaced my Atoms with them on the new bike. I can't see how it would matter unless it has something to do with the tire compound or those "sipes" on the tread edge but I doubt there is anything to it.

directional tires matter off-road. even on a gravel road, what's on the GP4000S is way too shallow to do a damn thing.

Tread on road tires is purely cosmetic and at least one tire company has admitted adding direction arrows to cut the inquiries about which direction the tires should be mounted.
Apart from that the convention is to mount tires with the label (if only on one side) on the drive side centered on the valve stem.
