Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

picked up specialized Romin Evo Expert saddle today (picts)

was having some issues with my arione lately which was causing a lot of chaffing. It seemed to be to narrow for my sit bones while also being to wide in the mid saddle. I talked with several friends at my LBS and every person who was on an arione made the switch to this romin evo pro. They have a 30 day return policy so I will give it a go. Got it home and spent a good chunk of time playing around with the position. Went on a 5 mile ride, most of which was spent stopping and repositioning. finally got it close to where it feels good. I have a 35 mile ride planned tomorrow morning so I can come back with thoughts. As far as asthetics go, I'm not really keen on it but at this point I'm going for comfortable and will still pass for not hideous. If it works out to be a comfy saddle, I will put my pride in asthetics aside.

Edited - I already tilted it down a hair

I am pretty happy with mine. I am not a big Specialized fan, but you can't beat their saddles, shoes, and helmets (for my body at least).

Specialized makes great stuff and I own a lot of it. But the guy who came up with the gloss graphic on the new Toupe and Romin should be fired...an aesthetic blunder IMO.

Great saddles both Romin and Toupe in my experience...own both.
Good luck.
PS: I like the saddle look overall but curious if you other guys think the gloss graphic looks hideous?...our own 41 focus group...not sure where Specialized focus group was. If being critical, the pin stripe Romin original I thought was marginal cosmetically...pin stripes?...and the plastic bits on the Toupe many have commented on are ridiculous as well. But I ride them because the saddles themselves with width sizing are so good.

I am testing this one out. IF I end up liking it after 30 days, I will buy the all black carbon rail version. I HATE the red accents on it

I spend zero percent of the time I am riding looking at my saddle, just sayin'...

Personally, I think the Boyd decals look a lot worse than the saddle.

+1

I've got 2 Romin Evo's and like them a lot. I rode a Romin before that and prefer the shape of the evo. It can be a little trickey getting the angle right. Mine looks like it's pointing down a bit when it's set right for me, but it's really the tail curves up pretty dramatically. The Romin evo reallly shines when you're in an agressiive position (at least for me).

What size did you get. Many suggest going up a size that the specialized tool suggests. This is only for the Evo though. I heard specialized will revise the sizing and drop the smallest and add a larger 160+ size. I have the 143 and I LOVE my evo. I got the pro model as it wasn't much more. When I need another I will go for the 155.

Admittedly, I have to say the exact same thing.... I've got a Romin, a Toupe, both my road shoes and mtb shoes are BG's and I've been using their helmets since the first generation of that "shark's mouth" (don't recall the exact model name) came about in the late 90's. Many of Specialized's products really do "hit the nail on the head" no matter what one may think of them. (Personally, I've owned quite a few of their bikes as well...all the way back to my first mtb (80's Rockhopper) and have never been disappointed with one).

Please do.
I have a Toupe, that I would probably have to replace at the end of this season. I think the Romin might be my next saddle.

doesn't the carbon rail version require some kind of special seatpost to use it, or can it fit in a standard post?

O RLY. Dat's what I have too.

I have a little time left on my exchange period, I bought a new bike take-off Romin Evo comp gel... might see about getting the carbon one.

I test road the gel one then bought the carbon pro. I thought the pro was much more comfortable! It replaced my toupe that I was originally riding.

Any clamp that hold from the top and bottom works. Some of the ones that grip from the side may not work. Your post is fine. If you already have the comp gel then I wouldn't upgrade to the pro. Wait until it wears out and then replace it. The only benefit is a little saved weight.

that's what I was wondering. carbon has some give.

not that I don't like my comp gel, but I don't think I would wear it out for years. it's not a flexible saddle like a toupe that you could wear out in a season.

The pro and expert have the same padding and comfort. The comp gel is different. The carbon rails on the Pro are not more comfortable than the ti on the expert. It's just lighter.

The romin expert did not work for me, actually worked for 15 mins and then no matter what I did in the ride it was a real PITA. Not saying the saddle is bad, i think is a great saddle but did not work for me at all. I use a toupe for the record.

Romin or Romin Evo? Many complained about the padding and the nose being too wide on the Romin. The Romin Evo is much better for most but not all. Many are in love with it. You can get a similar style saddle with a selle SMP saddle too.

I got a Romin Evo to replace an older Alias saddle, and after trying it for 2 or 3 months I've given up on it. It's going up on Ebay soon, I never noticed enough of an improvement to be worthwhile despite playing with the tilt angle and setback many times. Just not for my sit bones, I guess.

I have the Toupe on my other bike.

I use my RE on my A bike which does about 100mi/week. I have no sores whatsoever.

I have a Toupe and love the flatness of the saddle. How do you NOT slide forward on the Romin shaped saddles??

PS - I like the red accents since my bike also has red accents. But the shiny black accent on my Toupe catches my shorts and is a huge design fail!
