Can You Help Me With My French?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I think I know what a "Col" is; essentially a mountain pass. But, I don't know what a "Cote" is. I thought it translated into "Coast", but that doesn't apply to hills.

Côte is coast, as in the Côte d'Ivoire - "Ivory Coast." Is this within the context of the Tour?

Côte means coast but also means rib. Coté means the side of something, such as "à coté de la mer" meaning seaside, or "à coté de la route" for roadside. Côte is pronounced like "coat", and coté sounds like "co-tay".

yes, I know, dumb, but couldnt help myself.

santa maria! Word play is fun, especially between two languages, we do it a lot here.
I hope you were able to understand a bit of what I wrote, while probably not grammatically correct, it was just playing around with words.

I'm appalled that you would bring a cute little seal (phoque) into this conversation .

Also, coté (with an accent) is side. Not sure of the context you are seeing the word though.
