My first Metric Century ! Finally !!

I started riding three years ago when I was 37. I had hoped to have completed a metric century and a century ride last summer but a bakers cyst and life in general got in the way.

This year I rode of 400 miles in May and then 454 in June. My wife is training for the Chicago marathon in October and I have two little kids so time can be hard to come by. I tried to get a big ride in on Saturday but the 97 degree weather stopped me at 25 miles. It was horrible. I have never felt that awful after such a short ride.

So I got up today thinking the weather would again stop me but at 81 degrees it felt better that it had in a week. I took advantage of the light sunday traffic and hit the road. I stopped only twice ( once at Subway to get a 6 inch turkey sub on wheat and once at a gas station for more zero calorie Powerade) and was able to maintain 16 mph throughout the ride which is good for a guy who avaerages 17.5 mph on 25 mile rides. I made it home in under 4 hours and my legs still had gas left in the tank. I have ridden quite a few 50 mile rides but always felt exhausted at the end.

I have a group century ride on july 29th. Im not convinced I can do it yet but I am going to try.

I did my first metric century this May in a charity ride. 2500 people and 8 of them were guys we ride with on the regular. Averaged 17.5 and felt good, I don't think I could do that solo though! Good luck on the century ride!

Good for you, the full century will be easy for you if you did a metric with energy to spare. Hydration and energy will be your keys, good luck, I have my first metric in October, building base and strength after several surgeries. Keep it up!

You will do the century no problem, it is more of a mental challenge than physical.

You can do it. It is always faster in a group. My average speed for the century last year was faster than I ride 20 miles alone.
