HED replacement question
 

Last week, my bike was knocked over by a gust while I was at a rest stop. Everything seemed fine except when I was climbing a monster hill and switched to the 23 cog and the chain went right into te spokes. I didn't even know what side te bike had fallen on as my riding partner picked it up.

My question is what is the appropriate thing for hed to di for the repair? The wheel was pretty out of true. Some spokes were gouged near the hub and part of the hub even had gouges in it. Not sure if the hub is serviceable ecause of the gouges. Wondering of others experience with hed crash replacement work...
My lbs has already sent the wheel back.

An LBS should be able to replace the spokes. Unless some got pulled through the rim the rim should be fine. Ditto the hub, meaning it should be fine (except cosmetically). To send the wheel to HED seems a bit excessive.

This is not a wheel defect etc. It's because the dropout got bent when the bike fell over. No wheel company (or wheel builder or LBS) will warranty a wheel where something took out a bunch of spokes. It's kind of like going to the car dealer because the fender has a huge dent in it, one that wasn't there when you drove the car away.

It would be appropriate for HED to ask if you want to buy a new wheel or if you want the old wheel back the way it is (I'm guessing they won't repair it because of liability issues). They may offer a crash replacement price of some kind because that's basically what it is.

As long as the rim wasn't compromised a normal LBS should be able to rebuild the wheel.

When the bike fell your hanger got bent and the reason the RD went into your spokes...

It sucks, but you should end paying for the repair...

I know I have to pay. I'm wondering how they will go about repairing it. No need to be a wisenheimer. What are crash replacement prices typically?

Danielle, ignore crash replacement, just take it to a good local LBS and get them to replace the damaged spokes - it won't cost you much at all.

My lbs sent the wheel back to hed.

I would think HED is going to offer to rebuild it at prices that are better than a complete wheel crash replacement. If they don't, you just need it shipped back so that someone else can rebuild it. Apparently your LBS doesn't build custom wheels; most of the LBSes near me don't either.
