Nashbar chain measurement ruler

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Nashbar chain measurement ruler

As an adjunct to the other "I hate my KMC missing link" thread that I just started as well (I finally got the dang thing on but it was friggin' hard as heck), wanted to also comment on my Nasbhar chain measurement length ruler.

On my old ultegra chain (I have no idea how many miles were on it, but probably at least 3000) the Nashbar chain measuring tool promptly dropped into the chain with both settings (0.75 and 1.0) fully. All the way in.

On my brand-new KMC chain that I just painstakingly installed, the measuring tool does not drop in at all on the 1.0 length, and when flipped over to the 0.75 length, it also doesn't drop in (but looks like it's imminently going to drop in - it's close.)

So at least with my well-used old vs brand new chain, the Nashbar chain measuring length ruler/tool seems to roughly work (to my surprise.) I know a lot of folks here bash on these quick-measure tools and tell you to use a calibrated ruler instead, but at least with my quick and dirty comparison, the Nashbar tool seems pretty good. I'll have to update this post after a few weeks when I put a small amount of miles on the chain and see if the Nashbar tool starts overestimating wear on the 0.75 length.

To beat a dead horse, it would be informative to do the regular measurement with a ruler to see how much roller wear is affecting things.
