Conti GP but not GP4000s, 24mm

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Conti GP but not GP4000s, 24mm

I have seen these 24mm Continental Grand Prix tires at times...

Does anyone know if they are as good quality as the GP4000/GP4000s tires or are they a step down??

I like the idea of trying a 24mm width rather than the 23mm I use, 25mm seems kinda wide for a skinny 140 pound guy like myself.

If you have any input on these, specifically if they are really the same as the GP4000s or not, let me know!

GP is a training-oriented tire. Cheaper, heavier, stiffer, more durable than the GP4000.

I have the GP 24's and they seem fine. Perhaps they're not quite as nice as the 4000's, but they're close. It's a little hard to compare, because I have the 4000's on my Litespeed Classic, and the GP 24's on an Eddy Merckx MX Leader; of course the Litespeed / 4000's combo will ride more smoothly. I have the same wheelset on both bikes.

I have gotten one flat on the GP 24's, but that was partially my fault due to riding too closely to the edge of the road where there was more debris.

check this out: GP4000s is a great tire. And!!! it runs big.
So get your GP4000s in a "23" It will measure closer to 24.
Done.

I have worn out 1 set of the 24mm GP's, and have over 3000 mi on the 2nd set, still going strong. Long wearing, handle well, and tough and supple The primary difference is the thread count. The 24's are 180TPI, while the 23 and 25mm are 330. I just got a set of 25mm GP 4000. it's really hard to tell if they are better, as they went on a new set of wheels. I wanted to go a little wider with the 23mm rims, or I would have just bought the 24's again.

Another approach is to use 2 Continental Force tires, which are 24mm wide

I have the 28mm version of this tire and it is very good. Quite happy with it.

I actually found by accident that one of the cheapest tires out there, the Conti Ultra Sport is a pretty solid training tire. It sells for $20 at most LBSses without a sale.

The drawback is that it's a significantly heavier tire than the race tires, but that's actually a good thing for most training purposes. Aside from the fact that you work harder, I found that the thicker tire wall was pretty thorn resistant and wear resistant. I even ran that tire on my bike trainer for a few months hoping to kill it so I could upgrade to something nicer, and was shocked at how well it held up (a lot longer than my Rubino Pros prior to it.)

I had only bought it as a temporarry replacement for a blown tire while Conti4000 were coming from PBK, and ended up riding it for nearly the whole year.

Thanks for the replies.

I have been running 23mm GP4000s tires for the past couple of years and am pretty happy with them.

I know there is a movement towards wider, and supposedly 25 is the new 23. I am a lightweight (less than 140 pounds) so I don't really think I need 25...so the 24mm GP sounded interesting. I may consider them for winter riding, but for now will stick with the 23mm GP4000s...or maybe try to find a cheap set of force on sale.

You might want to check out the So. Cal forum. I believe this is the exact tire they were discussing the other day. There is info in that thread about sites that are running special pricing on these tires right now. I believe one of them is probikekits.

From what I've been told, 25's actually have less roll resistance than 23's do.
