Hot snacks

I'm sick of melted powerbars, what do you do to keep your snacks relatively cool?

Keep mine in my jersey pockets, dun work.

Menel 07-23-12 01:44 PM

Chocolate melts.

More natural food bars like Larabar, Clifbar, Odwalla bar don't melt. Maybe a little soft, but don't completely turn to molten goo. Tested and proven in 105deg GA heat.

Also even more natural like Bananas, Fig newtons, etc, won't melt either.

getaklug 07-23-12 01:45 PM

Thinking about putting them in a bag then into my water bottle once i drink enough for it to fit, then drink from another bottle till i need that one. I'll try that one now, also noticed bottles in jersey pocket stay cooler. Just sayin.

There's that too, you saying i don't eat well enough?

Clif Shot Bloks don't melt. The fruit & nut Kind Bars are also a good choice for hot weather, and aren't as bulky as a Clif Bar. My credentials: Phoenix, AZ summer rides.

tagaproject6 07-23-12 04:10 PM

I thought this is about snacks with chilis and peppers...nvm.

cbuddy2005 07-23-12 04:49 PM

I put mine next to my hydration pak bladder, I carry ice water with me here in cool Texas.

WhyFi 07-23-12 04:54 PM

Stingers. Mmmmmm...

jmX 07-23-12 05:14 PM

Don't take stuff that can melt in the summer time. Fig newtons, Peanuts, Shot bloks, or Stinger waffles are what I might use on a long summer ride.

danmc 07-23-12 06:22 PM

I just go with the flow during hot weather. I pack a baggie of cheese, some cubed bread...throw some skewers in my back pocket, and stop for a fondue break mid ride.

TrojanHorse 07-23-12 07:03 PM

I took fig newtons on my last long ride and ended up with fig crumbles. I don't think the whole wheat ones hold together as well as the regular ones.

I'm partial to clif bars because I can get them in bulk at Costco and they don't melt. And I like 'em.

Flatballer 07-23-12 07:18 PM

crunchy style granola bars are good whether it's 105 or 5 outside. I don't like Clif Bars in the winter because they freeze.

c_bake 07-23-12 07:43 PM

Problem solved, and it's well documented that sardines are great for endurance activities. Tastes great warm too! These are the best kind, I don't recommend the cheaper brands as they taste pretty nasty.

I like the Raw Revolution stuff for power bars and the cliff shot blocks for a quick boost. Neither melt.

nhluhr 07-24-12 10:01 AM

I like things like nutter butter, bananas, etc. Powerbars are just about the nastiest food you could possibly carry, hot or cold.

Ever try to eat a powerbar below freezing temps while tied into a belay at 12,000 ft?

slowandsteady 07-24-12 10:42 AM

I freeze my powerbars first. They hold up for quite a while like that. Just don't try to eat it frozen. You'll break your teeth.

pihb 07-24-12 10:53 AM

nutrigrain bars - already bagged and ready to throw in the jersey. taste the same warm or at room temp

thump55 07-24-12 10:58 AM

I love chocolate covered granola bars on a century ride. I usually eat about eight of them.

To keep them from melting, I either eat them the night before in my living room, or before I start the ride.

PayDays.

Oh man, haven't you tried King Oscars?? Those are my fave, though my dad likes the WildPlanet ones better. Also, the ones in olive oil are FAR better than the ones in water, IMO.

WhyFi 07-24-12 06:18 PM

Kimchi also fares well when pocket-warm.

Give up and resign to the fact that you're going to have a hot snack. I usually hit any hotdog venders I see along ride.

Nutter Butter cookies, yes! Peanut butter cookies or crackers rule... But if I stop at a store, I can splurge on an ice cream sandwich or Moon Pie instead...

Totally agree that Powerbars are gross.
