Amateur doping in NY

Hi all,

As this is making the rounds in New York at the moment, I thought I'd like to share.

Two cyclists tested positive for EPO at Gran Fondo New York on May 20, 2012. David Anthony of New York City admitted today to having used the drug to enhance his performance at bike races. Gabriele Guarini from Prato, Italy accepted the results of his A sample.

There's also a discussion going on at [strike]one of the dopers team's homepage[/strike] a NY cycling blog that happens to be run by someone who runs his [ed: David Anthony's] team. [correction by gsteinb]

I remember being a little baffled by the likelihood of doping controls at the GFNY. Guess they had a point.

Was it pcad?

ravenmore 07-24-12 09:22 AM

Yeah they are starting to test more in the non pro ranks. We have a couple people down here busted in recent years.

Stickney 07-24-12 09:27 AM

So, if you get caught positive for crack or heroine or cocaine will they notify your employer?

LOL!

Wait. You don't think they're testing for weed too, are they? :twitchy:

Actually, when the MS150 starts testing riders, I'm out.

Drag 07-24-12 09:42 AM

I swear all the riders that dropped me in the A group ride this past Sunday were dopin'. Thats my story and thats what Im sticking with.

nhluhr 07-24-12 10:19 AM

I always thought Gran Fondos were just social rides. I guess I'm wrong, but if somebody from a social ride like MS150 or STP or something approached me asking for a blood sample, they'd get a foot sample instead.

roby 07-24-12 10:21 AM

umm... so... did they win...? What did they use? Where did they get it? :)

Yes, but then I couldn't make this useless comment that insinuates that I wish to dope too...

mercator 07-24-12 10:29 AM

This is great news.
I did a gran fondo this year that had a king of the mountains prize, complete with polka dot jerseys. I was feeling kinda bad that the guy in the over 50 group who beat me (convincingly) was almost 60.
Now I have an excuse.

Not really, not in amateur racing. Ironically these Grand Frodo idiots charge such a massive entry fee (hundreds) they can afford things like computer timing chips and doping control that amateur race organizers can't. This guy failed the Grand Frodo doping control. If those jerks had asked me to pee into a cup after a Grand Frodo I would have told them to bite me.

Pcad rides clean, and he doesn't have the results to prove it.

Homebrew01 07-24-12 11:03 AM

I'm guilty of being a dope....

The GFNY is a qualifier for the UCI World Tour, including a rainbow jersey.

The UCI World Cycling Tour (UWCT) is a series of UCI-sanctioned races that will be held all over the world. The UWCT will comprise a maximum of 15 qualifier events, leading to the UWCT Final, the former UCI Masters Road World Championships. The top 25% in each age group of the qualifier events will automatically have the right to compete in the UWCT Final and race for the coveted UCI rainbow jersey. After its launch last year, the UCI World Cycling Tour enters the 2012 season with more events in more continents. The series has become a brand for amateurs and masters in cycling. If I was doping, I'd start a thread about it here and you know it.

"Ironically these Grand Frodo idiots charge such a massive entry fee (hundreds) they can afford things like computer timing chips"

The last couple of times I rode the Hotter-n-Hell 100 (massive charity ride with like 12,000 people), timing chips were like $5 extra, and I think the following year, they were just automatically included. There may be a big set-up cost, but that would relate more to the size of the crowd than the entry fee. There may also be reliability issues. On a charity ride, if the thing doesn't work, they could just give you your $5 back, it's not like you miss out on valuable prizes or anything.

Weren't you shooting up Synvisc to improve the performance of your knee?

I was getting Synvisc administered by my ortho surgeon so I could walk up and down my stairs let alone ride the stupid bicycle.

Slippery slope ..... first you start doping to walk .... then to ride a bike ....
