Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New build coming - your thoughts?

I have a custom steel frame on the way. It will be metallic blue with a fade to metallic gray for the rear triangle. metallic gray lettering and logo on the front. I'm planning to go a little matchy-matchy on the color.

Build Plan:
2011 SRAM Force (gray bottom bracket)
3T Rotundo Pro bars
3T Doric seat post
3T Funda Pro fork
3T ARX Pro stem
Fulcrum Racing Zero wheels
Headset -- ?

I'm undecided on the saddle (thinking Selle San Marco Regale Team)
I will probably do Fizik white bar tape.
I gotta remember to pick up a FD braze-clamp adapter and seatpost collar as well.

What can you recommend for the external headset? I would like it to be gray metal to match the rest of the bike. The only one i'm aware of is the Chris King Nothreadset in Pewter.

Sounds pretty sweet–love my racing zero wheels (good choice!). Although to be honest, I can't imagine how 3T products would look on a non-CF bike. It'll be interesting to see.

well, I already have the bars and stem and Force group. I would have liked to do an all-ENVE build, but that's way too expensive.

i am a little concerned about how the Funda fork will look on a steel bike, but apparently Baum cycles does it all the time

If you didn't already have the Force I'd have gone for a cheaper group and nicer wheels, but it sounds like you're all set up for a great build

I do agree on Ultegra. I have a friend that works at a bike shop and he tells me he sees more issues with SRAM than Shimano.

I have had several SRAM groups and haven't really had "issues" but that's really irrelevant...I do have the SRAM group already

For a pewter or gunmetal grey headset, I have seen only Chris King and Hope, but others may exist. Hope has some great products and some not-so-great. I don't know that I would buy their headset.

CK is somewhat expensive, but blingy. I would personally use a black or silver Cane Creek 110 if you want a premium headset. And honestly, I just bought a Cane Creek 40 for my MTB build, which is a very solid unit for a lot less money.
