Hi, so I'm a noob to the world of cycling. I did weeks of research before making the jump and finally decided on a Schwinn Madison 2012 for $425. The only thing is, I hope I got "the right size". Now before anyone tells me this has been talked about, I know. I researched these forums with a fine tooth comb but what I haven't seen is someone explain why the Madison's are sized just the way they are. I'll explain:

I'm just over 6'1" with a 33" inseam (34" PBH) and from almost every chart out there, I should easily be on a 58 - 60 cm bike with at least a 57 or larger top-tube! So this led me to getting the Madison XL which is a 58 seat and 57.5 top. But those damn Maddy sizings say I should be on their size L, which is only a 56 ST/56.6 TT. Even the sticker on the bike said eht XL was for people 6'2"- 6'6"!

The ONLY thing that would "match" size wise on the Large is the standover height. So what's the deal? Are Madison's just really tall bikes with cramped geometry? The reason I bought the XL instead of the L is because I thought the ST and TT would be much more important factors than just the standover (which pretty much is a nutgrazer for me on the XL). I've seen that user Scrodzilla at 5'10" rides a L so I assumed that me at 6'1" would be fine on a XL. The people at the bike shop that set it up said the Schwinn geo was weird, that I could probably be on a smaller bike for the standover alone, but that everything else seemed fine. Thoughts? Explanations?

What do you mean, you "hope you got the right size"?

Did you pay for it already?....Did you take delivery or possession of the Madison yet?...Did you even test ride it first, before you "got" it?

BTW

You do know that this is the Road Cycling Forum and not the Singlespeed & Fixed Gear Forum, my friend...Right?

I don't know what's up with Schwinn's sizing on the Madison. However, what I do know, is that whenever you have the opportunity to test ride a bicycle before purchase, you should always take advantage of it...

I didn't get a chance to ride it because it was an online purchase. There are two really nice LBS in my area but had nothing in my price range that was as nice as the Madison... mostly heavy Steel bikes in the 400 range or old used bikes. So no I didn't get to ride it. Also I wasn't aware that it wasn't considered a road bike... I was misinformed. If a mod wants to delete this thread feel free and I'll repost in the appro forum.

I don't think you're in the wrong place. You're not talking about the drivetrain at all, and a bike frame is a bike frame. You may find more people that have this exact bike in the Single Speed forum, but roadies are great about sizing their bikes perfectly, so this is probably a fine place to start.

I haven't been in the SS market for a few years so I had to take a look at the newest Madison. I like the paint scheme although I'm disappointed they stopped making the chrome fork crowns, are no longer shipping with drop bars, and most surprising: went to aluminum instead of cro-mo!! I guess they're going for a more modern, urban look, while the older Madisons (pre 2010) were more of a classic track look. Anyway, doesn't matter. You bought it because you liked it. I'm sure it's still a good bike.

As for the sizing, I'm not an expert, but I am about your size and went through a similar sizing experience. The XL is potentially a little big if you don't have at least an inch of clearance when standing over it. Now, standover isn't the most important part of sizing, (top tube is more important for riding comfort), but it does help to be able to actuall touch the groud at a stop.

Do you feel stretched on it or can you ride it comfortably with a little bend in your knee? That's really the most important part.

Now, if you can return it, there are places online to get a decent road bike with drop bars and gears (and a chance to size it over again) for $425
(or slightly more). I like Giantnerd.com and Bikesdirect.com. Look at the Schwinn LeTour Classic and Gravity Liberty 2. Or if really like the Madison for it's single speed and urban style, and it's comfortable, keep it. Just make sure you ride the hell out of it and stop worrying about what the charts say.

The Schwinn Madison is indeed a road bike, but it's a special type of road bike, a single speed road bike. However, when most cyclists speak of road bikes, they envision a multi-geared bike with drop handlebars. Of course, these days bikes seem to be morphing into all kinds of diverse shapes, so maybe it doesn't really matter as much as it used to, anyway...

However, with respect to BF, I guess it does mean something, in terms of organization and categories...

PS.

Different manufacturers use different methods and standards in sizing their bikes. A 58 cm produced by KHS may very well be a 56 cm produced by Schwinn. Ya just never can really tell, until you've mounted and ridden the bike. At the very least, do a standover.

there's a long thread on madison's in the SSFG forum. From what I recall, they're sized quite tall.

Thanks for all the replies so far. Well standover basically makes my balls sit on the bar... there's still room like an inch or more to the actual pubic bone. I can lift the bike an inch or so and I can stand over it comfortably, there's just not much room for error. I didn't realize the shop I ordered it from considered it a special order so unfortunately I can't return it for a L. Had I known this I probably wouldn't have taken the chance. I had read conflicting info on the importance of standover and that it wasn't nearly important as the tube lengths which seemed to align to my geometry much closer on the XL. I'm riding it daily but honestly wasn't sure how it should "feel". It does feel "big" if that makes sense but not necessarily uncomfortable. My legs feel comfortable, although I feel like I'm leaning on my hands a bit. Would a shorter top tube make this better or worse? I guess the only thing to do is stick with it a while and see if it works for me.

One other thing, the seat is uncomfortable as hell. Any upgrade recommendations? Thanks!

I ride a 2011 madison (same geo as a 12) and it is a small, and it is sized an the large end of bikes sizing. in contrast I also am on a 54cm Madone. I love my Madison and it is what got me into cycling.

I was just thinking that perhaps, North Road Handlebars just might help you in this instance.

For example:

Of course, you could just immediately place the Madison on Craigslist for the amount you paid for it, and just reorder another in your correct size.

It would save whoever bought it the shipping cost and 2 week wait. Thanks for the handlebar suggestion...
