Cable Routing - Is this bad?

It works a lot better up under the bars if I cross sides coming out of the shifters into the adjuster boss things, but then I have to cross them back somewhere. Is this ok?

I've heard of people do that to improve shifting on the RD due to Shimano's under bartape routing and the increased friction...

Just make sure the cable aren't rubbing too bad and you should be fine...

sweet, thanks!

That is the way that my Roubaix cables are routed.

carpediemracing 07-28-12 01:23 PM

Until I started using Nokons that's how I routed my cables. Works on shorter head tube bikes well.

svtmike 07-28-12 06:48 PM

I have my 6700 bikes routed that way. No issues.

tagaproject6 07-28-12 08:12 PM

I have all my bikes' cables routed in this manner. I haven't had any issues yet.

What kind of demented mind routes cables like that?

Minds that don't want a rats nest of friction in front of their headtube.

Countdown until someone quotes the rules.

It's fine, makes on the fly barrel adjustment a little odd if you're not ready for it though.

I'll show you when I get it done ;) Basically, with the under bar wrap routing, you end up having a cable come out and then have to loop tightly back the opposite direction to get it into the same side barrel adjuster/cable stop thing. If you cross it over to the other side, it goes better.

pallen 07-29-12 10:34 AM

Maybe his helps. You can barely see the shifter cables under the silver cap on the stem. Right now, they cross and go over to the opposite side cable stop on the head tube. When I tried the going back to the same side with them leaving enough slack to be able to turn the bars, it was pretty awkward.

My LBS re-routed my cables this way. I was shocked (and pissed) at first, but after riding it for a while, it works just fine - so I left it.

Scorer75 07-29-12 10:51 AM

It's perfectly fine, and looks better. Did mine that way last night after changing the cables.

still looks like a rats nest ! and that front brake cable housing looks alittle on the short side

Brian Ratliff 07-29-12 12:05 PM

I do that on my SRAM bike. When I had Campy, I routed the cables that way as well. The only reason not to do that is 1) if it's not necessary - ie. if you are running old Shimano with external cable routing, or 2) if the cable stops have the cables hitting the downtube in that configuration, which happens occasionally with large tube carbon frames.

I think you have taken this N+1 thing too far!

Doohickie 07-29-12 08:59 PM

I have two bikes with under-wrap cabling, and they are routed the conventional way (without the crossover underneath). Everything works fine. I will admit, though, that they both have non-indexed Suntour Barcons, so it doesn't need precise shifting.

Nick Bain 07-29-12 09:37 PM

Don't forget to tie and solder those for stronger shifting!
