Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The Road Machine is definitely quieter. The magnetic units are pretty noisy. I think there are some videos on YouTube to demonstrate the noise, although some people make it more dramatic than it really is. It also does not provide nearly the resistance that the Bushido does. The Bushido, however, is pretty expensive and much more so than the road machine. You can definitely simulate climing steep hills, and in fact, if you get the PC upgrade, you can connect your computer via USB stick to the Bushido, and it will adjust resistance automatically for their videos of very famous European climbs. I can't do them, they're so hard even on the lowest settings. I've given up, lol. If $$ is an issue, you can get high resistance from the less expensive units, such as the Booster and Satori. If you want power, the lowest is the Flow. Cycleops has magnetic units that don't provide as much claimed resistance, but probably still more than enough and probably cheaper and more readily available. I love my bushido, and use it the most, mainly because of the resistance it can provide (same reason as you). Noise isn't much of a concern to me. My wife uses the road machine the most, mainly when we're riding at the same time.
Thanks, I don't think the noise would bother me but I will check out the YouTube videos. I am also interested in the Emotion rollers. If they had enough resistance, they would be the best option because they would probably suck Less than a trainer.

True, and even at 80 rpm, with 53/11 you're doing 30 mph, and the KK is providing 600W, but there's just something unnatural about simulating climbing and having your rear wheel spinning that fast. Sprinting, yes, but not "climbing", but I guess beggars can't be choosers. . .Also, I think that KK curve replicates outdoor riding on a flat 0% grade. I'm not sure but I believe the eMotion has 3 or 4 resistance settings, but none of them are very significant. Maybe someone who has and uses them can chime in.

I hear ya, and mentally it is strange to hear the thing whirring along, but 600w at 80rpm is 600w at 80rpm no matter how you slice it. Tilt the bike up 7%, put on some headphones, and HTFU. It's (mostly) all in your head.

They have enough resistance. The magnet has four setting (0-3). I do most of my workouts in the big ring and setting 1. I simulate hills with setting 3. Big ring/little cog in setting 3 it would be pretty hard to turn the pedals. Mid to upper end of the cassette I typically do 20 minutes with a cadence around 80.

Not to derail (yet another) roller thread, but I can get three hours in on those (but I am a bit off) on a regular basis.

Well do the Emotion rollers suck less than a trainer? It sounds like you can simulate hill climbs. What I would like is simulating a 12% grade. Do you think this would be possible with the Emotion rollers. With the KK, I can push hard enough to get the burn necessary to improve my hill climbing it doesn't exactly feel like grinding up a 12% grade.

You can ride Emotion rollers for three hours??? I have a hard time going more than an hour on a trainer mostly because of boredom. So I guess Emotion rollers do suck less.

granted I'm a bit more hardcore, so your mileage may vary, but yeah it's more natural riding so it's a bit easier mentally and physically on the parts of the anatomy that need that sort of thing.

Can you get as much resistance out of the Emotion rollers as you would from a KK trainer? I hope you get more. I will probably always keep my KK trainer as it is great for intervals but having a set of rollers would be great.

It's very helpful to have a DVD setup for your trainer. In fact, I think it's absolutely essential if you plan on using your trainer regularly. Try as I may, I cannot keep up week after week of trainer HTFU with no stimuli. (Weirdly enough I can do 2+ hrs on a treadmill.)

I'm doing a lot of trainer riding now (all weekdays) and have been enjoying watching a lot movies since I'm on the bike a lot. I use a HRM to make sure I'm not slacking during the ride. For the interval stuff, I tend to use Spinervals or Sufferfest, but I'm doing more aerobic long work than sprints as of now. I log about 4-5 hrs per week on the trainer, every week. (Weekends are another 4 hours of outdoor riding, and then double thoes hours for runs and swims thrown on top.)

I personally prefer the adjustable magnetic resistance on the emotions. It gives all the resistance I can use.
