SRAM 54T TT Chainring.....fad?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

SRAM 54T TT Chainring.....fad?

I have begun seeing a lot of people in the area with SRAM TT Chainrings on their road bikes...mainly 54T. Why the increase in popularity?

Were they on sale or something? There's not much difference in gear ratio, they're stiffer than regular rings (esp SRAM Red), and combined with an on-sale 12-something cassette it's not bad.

It also makes people wonder why someone "needs" a 54T. Heh.

I used an undesirable-to-me 12-25 with a 55T ring for much of last year (on group ride descents a 12T gets a bit short). Now I'm back on an 11-25 with a 53 (the 55 had some bent teeth). I still have the 12-25 but since I go so slow in training and haven't done group rides it's not an issue.

TT rings are supposed to be stiffer
but
i believe people get them because they say SRAM on them, just for the looks.

at least thats what the guys i know who have them bought them for.
