Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

For those of you that listen to music...

Do you use iPhone / iPod? If so, where / how do you mount it (arm, handlebars w/ mount, etc...)?

Iphone in a jersey pocket. Headphone wire run under the jersey. Only put in the right ear bud with music barely audible at speed--just enough to give me a boost when I need it.

iPhone in the beltpack clipped to the backside portion of the waistband. Earbuds cord runs up the back and each bud is twisted once around the helmet strap so the wind doesnt pull the cord to one side making it feel like it's tugging (saves fussing with it every 5min in the crosswinds).

It's my guess that mounting the iPhone to bike will result in early failure due to the vibrations and sharp movements.

iPhone in the back pocket
Motorola S9-HD bluetooth headphones

no wires + ability to ride with one ear if i want + controls on the headset + can hang the headset around my neck...best solution i've found so far.

While on the subject of music while riding. What do you all think about a guy who plays music, loudly, from handlebar mounted speakers. He recently joined our informal group and he is annoying everyone not just with the volume of his music but with his music selection. We normally ride on backroads and quiet residential areas so the music blaring from his bike is jarring at best.

What do you guys think?

Little square iPod in a ziplock in my left jersey pocket with cord running under jersey. Right earbud in, and left earbud hangs on collar.

I used to use my iPhone, but it ended up getting caked with sweat and grime even in a ziplock bag. (just from stuff running down the headphone cable). I really don't see how anyone has any type of music player without having it in a bag. Maybe it's the humidity here or something. But if I just clipped my ipod to my jersey strap, I'd expect it to not work after 3 or 4 rides.

I'd like them to come up with a bike version so I can get one! Seems like they're pretty close!

i have one b/c i use it for swimming too. Love it on a bike b/c it's easier to clip than in a bag. I see your point though.

playing music from your handlebars has got to be one of the top ten most Fredly things one can do on a bike.

Shoot on sight.

... or just explain that it interferes with verbal signals in the group

... and then ride him into a ditch.

The only guy I tolerate blasting music is the guy at the Hilly Hundred who has a plywood jam box strapped on the back of his cargo bike, and cranks Smoke On The Water while climbing a 20% grade. He earned it.

I wonder what would be more annoying....an older guy blasting classic rock, or a younger kid blasting dubstep.

This, and audible signals, I don't listen to music on group rides.

There is nothing more annoying than dubstep. It's like music, but w/o that annoying rhythm that most musicians put in their songs.
