Addiction - August 2012 addition

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Why would you consider lowering it? I'm so old.

No reason, it just sits more like an SUV now.

Well a lot of people make the mistake of lowering a car too low, or not installing stiffer dampers to compensate for the increased spring rate of the lower springs. For a daily driven car like you have. A set of H&R sport springs, or an Eibach pro kit would be a nice option to lower the stance a bit, and still retain ride quality with oem dampers.

So the new wheel/tire combination has a larger diameter than stock?

It's weird... the shipping boxes closed with the 17" rims in them, now the don't close with the 16s in them. The 17s have lower profile tires, so maybe it's some optical illusion.

I'm not at all an expert on research regarding the effect genetics has on athletic performance. Just pointing out the obvious.

That said, the race to ID genes will be on of the most fascinating (and impactful) medical stories to watch this decade.

Sure just let me gather some crime statistics from the 1800's.

Crime data going back more than a few decades is suspect.

Pinker's work calculating historic rates of violence is interesting attempt.

You went +1 in size? What are the actual tire numbers for each size? (Something like 225/55-R17)

The 17s have lower profile tires,
One of many things learned while racing - the tire size printed on the sidewall is fiction. You have to go by the measured specifications provided by the manufacturer.

In other words, two 285/35R18 tires from two different manufacturers are pretty much guaranteed to not be the same physical size.

You did go plus one. (larger rim, same tire diameters)

Nominally, those sizes should be interchangeable with no change in ride height or speedometer reading. The 17's do have a shorter sidewall, but the overall diameter of the tires should be within about 0.1 inches.

Car looks great with the new shoes too.

Based on TireRack spec sheets, they are essentially the same diameter.

I was clearly being sarcastic with my 1800's statistics search.

Based on my research, the 1800s were full of marauding bandits and corrupt big-businessmen who would prey on townsfolk and entrepreneurs until this guy showed up and killed them all.

I'm like Clint Eastwood in his prime without the looks, the macho, the athleticism or the charisma.

On the other hand I'm confident I play a meaner guitar than Mr. Eastwood.

All I know is I hate thieves. I want to tear the subhuman trash that stole Lester's bike limb from limb. Also don't forget....

Me neither, but I'm curious as to what the research says.

Instead, I got a bunch of black people run faster because they're black and they've been running forever.

The best was the comment that Kenyans and Ethiopians run fast because they run to school every day.
