Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So I hear Wiggins wants England to make bicycle helmets mandatory after some idiot got hit by a bus w/o a helmet. Ironically, I saw him riding around post his TT Olympic victory celebrating sans helmet. What makes him so special that totalitarian, hypocritical, muffin chops sporting, feminine hygiene product? Yeah, the guy is fast, but I almost want to boycott wearing a helmet against him. However, I know first hand the effects of concussions, so I will continue to wear a helmet. Now that I know he is supports totalitarian mandatory helmet legislation, I hope they bust him for doping, and strip him of everything.

In Floriduh, you don't even need a helmet on a motorcycle. I was lucky to be wearing one when I crashed mine. We x-rayed it later and the interior shell was cracked.

I need new bike shorts. I'm thinking of going with the DeSoto 400 mile ones.

Ohio only requires eye protection on motorcycles. I feel head protection is necessary, but I don't need laws to mandate that I wear one. I feel this is natural selection at work. If you're too stupid to not protect your head. You deserve the brain damage that results.

but then who gets to pay for that? Everyone with higher insurance premiums. That was the whole argument here in mi. for a while. But the law has been overturned here to.
So a motorcyclist can ride without a helmet but a motorist gets a ticket for not wearing a seat belt?

This was one day after my collarbone breaking crit crash last year. No S-Works skid lid, and I would be eating through a feeding tube, I assure you of that. The helmet did it's job perfectly, spreading out the blunt of the impact. Cracked the helmet in half in 3 places. I need no laws to tell me it is a good idea to protect my head.

Most of the time it probably results in a funeral, and life insurance, or family foots the bill. Either way the gene pool wins. No more contributions from no helmet wearing morons.

My point is I don't need laws to tell me to wear a helmet. Just like I don't need laws to tell me to carry a gun when I walk my dog in bad neighborhoods. It's common sense. It's a slippery slope, when we start letting the government mandate everything we do. Next thing you know we'll have mandatory sterilization, and a one child policy like China.

Drop in the bucket. You also pay higher insurance for ******es that drive SUV's, running cyclists off the roads so they could get home in time to watch American Idol with a bucket of KFC in their lap.

In some ways suggesting that EVERY cyclist wear a helmet for EVERY ride is like suggesting that EVERY motorist get 5 point harness, helmet, Nomex undies, fire supression, roll cage, etc. to drive their minivan to work.

I think we should just remove warning labels, and let the problem sort itself out.

I get your point as well. The thing is I am against insurance for the most part. All insurance seems to do is drive up prices, and make quality of care worse. I think I was just born too late. My dad tells me stories about when people used to make mistakes, and they had to suffer the consequences. That rarely happens much anymore. So many people live their lives not caring about any consequential measures for their actions.
