FWIW, acceleration is actually a little better with the 16", handling a little better with the 17", so know that there's a trade-off. If you're doing it for sex appeal, disregard this.

If I would have had a choice, I would have bought the manual, but they were in short supply and we needed the car pretty much immediately (and the dealer knocked off the $1k difference when I told him that I didn't want the automatic). The auto isn't so bad, but it's no manual.

The 6 speed is a great choice. The DSG (manual-auto/auto-manual) has its detractors. Buy diesel at a place that sells a lot of diesel. Find a good mechanic. Use the right oil. enjoy.
