Addiction - August 2012 addition

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

tell them you have a loan secured at your bank and that you will be back with a check from the bank. They will give you a good rate. Otherwise, go to your bank and get a real loan. You should not be paying more than 5%

"Kick rocks" never works. "Suck an egg" gets car salesmen every time, though.

good call. think of it this way, my mortgage is 2.6%. A car loan should be a little higher, but not double.

Not if you can earn more interest on your money than they're charging you to borrow it.

Plus depreciation and the difference between liability ins. And full meal deal insurance?

When I had cars I was all about 10 year old 'yotas. Get 'em for 1500-3000, replace every 3-5 years

You Strava Freds are ruining mountain biking.
Screw you. The point of a bicycle is to go fast. The point of a mountain bike is to go fast, offroad. It's even in the Olympics.

I've always hated that characterization of mountain bikers as go-slow, weed-smoking, navel-contemplating hippies. Go fast or go home.

And who the hell has the breath to say "Strava run" during a Strava run? If you can talk, you are doing it wrong.

Now you're having a conversation about buying used vs buying new, not a conversation about financing vs not financing.

Not that I buy many new cars, but my plan has always been finance through my credit union the full purchase price (tax and tags out of pocket), pick up gap insurance for less than $50 (I think it was $17), and let others take the hit if it gets wiped out in the first two years.

For all you "pay only cash" folks, if it gets toasted in a year, who gives you your lost cash back?

I've known people that have financed used cars, also.

The things I wrote are just reasons why financing a car seems totally insane to me.

Car free since 2004 so I'm a bit detached from the whole idea.

So a used car that's financed takes a greater hit in depreciation than a used car that's bought out of pocket? Not in my world. Also, I'd have the same insurance coverage, regardless.

...and until three weeks ago, I'd been car-free for a couple years longer than you, so NYAAAH!

I've made some AMAZING deals buying used cars with a stack of 100s. YMMV.

I would just go with bare bones liability. Self-insure the car itself. Car goes boom, I just go get another $1500-3000 car.
