Again, the ballistics report indicates bystanders were struck by fragments of rounds that shattered after hitting nearby hard objects. Would any training have really make that big of a difference in a chaotic shooting scene on a crowded NYC sidewalk? That's a dubious assumption. Do they really train guys for that? I'd argue that the cops weren't such bad shots since they didn't directly hit any bystanders.
That's all we need here is a gun nut dick measuring competition.

Mayor Bloomberg has a complete army of trigger happy paramilitary thugs. I'm pretty sure they even have their own tank. I remember hearing about that awhile back. The department even has anti-aircraft guns. I cannot fathom how anyone would want to live in such a place. Might as well be Lebanon, or Kosovo. Not to mention they have a handgun ban in the city. The funny thing, is this type of thing probably happens on a regular basis in some parts of the city, and you never hear about it. Clearly this was in a more well to do area so it made the news.
Trigger happy paramilitary thugs? Get a grip. That would never work in NYC. The NYPD does not shoot people very often. In this instance they really had no choice at all. I've known several NYPD police officers, most of them had never discharged a round in 20+ years of service. You don't want to shoot a gun in NYC, trust me. Bad things are inevitable.
How anyone can live in such a place? You must be joking. It's the greatest city in the world. I'd venture to say that the ultra wealthy, who can live anywhere, are heavily over-represented in NYC.
My daughter lives in midtown Manhattan, my in laws live in the Bronx, I've lived in and around NYC for my whole life, I went to college there, you really have absolutely zero point zero idea of what you are talking about here, so quit while you are ahead.

Almost forgot. Saw one of these today and coveted. First time I've seen a Felt and thought "I kinda want that".
Salesman comes up and says "That's got some serious juice... It's a brave man who would turn that upside down." (presumably because you would spill the juice).
Some bike salesmen are.... umm...

This sort of thing RARELY happens in New York City. Hell, a guy was mugging people on the A train recently and it was a big news item. 30 years ago that was routine EVERYWHERE, that would have never been a news item. The fact that it is underscores how much safer NYC is today than it was when I was in college. Of course you will have incidents like this in a densely packed urban center (the largest in the USA) of EIGHT MILLION ASS HOLES with many of them under the poverty line.

So great day watching Pro Challenge in Boulder. Crazy, great crowds on Flagstaff. However.... NBC's sports coverage officially bites big monkey berries. DVR'd the stages as a series and what do they do on the Boulder stage? Show all but the last 1.5hrs then cut to horse racing for 1.5hrs or so. Un freaking believable!!! After a facepalm-filled coverage of the Olympics NBC has now proven without a shadow of a doubt that they are totally incompetent when in comes to covering sports. A room full of chimps pressing buttons could have done better. And then there is a the whole reporter/commentator on the motorcycle getting in the way of the riders.... What a bunch of idiots.

A friend of mine is a NY Jets cheerleader you know. I am afraid to report I will not be visiting her, or pcadette anytime soon. I've been to NYC several times. It's not for me. Now SBXX he lives in where I would dare to say, might be the best place in the United States to live. The entire state is just awesome. Sadly I've been to close to half of our great states, and Colorado has not been one of them yet.
Must be on the short list for cyclists. Great riding, laid back, relatively accessible and inexpensive to boot. CO is just a mecca no matter how one rolls

It is hilarious, sorry. On a serious note, I agree with previous posts that it was a worst-case scenario and collateral damage was inevitable, etc etc.
Take a look from a different perspective. Out here in a god forsaken war zone, if I were to shoot NINE civilians in the course of an exchange of small arms with one enemy combatant, I would be absolutely fried - skinned and hung out to dry. Career over, vilified in the press, years in the brig followed by a dishonorable discharge and a ruined life. We have guys out here who will stand up from behind a wall of women and children and fire RPGs at us. No joke! This ain't a .45 Colt we're talkin about, and we don't return fire at these guys - because we can't without hitting some technically-innocent civilians. It's ironic that cops on the streets of Anytown USA can get away with 'collateral damage' on American citizens, in contrast to soldiers in war facing threats of exponentially greater magnitude who can't risk any possibility of injuring civilians actively aiding and abetting the enemy. I know the analogy isn't perfect, but there is something to be said for that.

I'm shocked, SHOCKED to hear the NYPD might be manipulating information being fed to the media.
