Oklahoma Heat

Unless I start at sunrise, my riding has been curtailed due to the heat. Anyone riding when its 105+ outside?

normandy83 08-01-12 08:54 PM

Still riding in the evenings after work in the DFW area. It's hot, but maybe I'm just used to 100+ degree temps after last summer. I make sure to drink enough water during the day to stay hydrated and haven't had any problems.

I did, the two days it got that hot.

Unfortunately, it got cooler and more humid since then.

SlowOlympian 08-01-12 09:15 PM

Yep, been doing quite a bit of riding around 100 degree temps, stay hydrated and dont be afraid to take breaks

It's to hot after work here in Dfw for me
I down to early-morning weekend rides

If I didn't ride in the South Texas heat I wouldn't get to ride ever... My weather conditions are 108 and 107 the next two days and it cools down to 104 for the weekend. Humidity is a nice solid 40-50% which at these temperatures feels like 60-70%. I start my afternoon rides at about 1830 in the 104-105 range and cool down to about 99 by the time I finish at 2000. As mentioned above, just accept the heat, drink as much as you can throughout the day before riding, use lots of ice in your water bottles and stop if it feels like too much.

Not me, work wont allow me to ride early in am so Tuesday and tonight hitting the trainer doing FTP intervals. Have a road race in KS Sunday so got to get the work in. One bad heat stress could set you back weeks in training and fitness.

I'm riding short rides - my 10mi commute home and some 20+mi evening rides on occasion. Right now, I wish the heat were the only thing keeping me off the bike.

RUOkie 08-02-12 02:44 PM

commuting (with a few intervals on the morning commute). Slogging it home. When it is over 110, even my 9mile commute feels like an eternity. Sunday morning rides at 6am. Last sunday it was 97 or so when I got home at 9am. I hate Oklahoma summers.

This 110* heat is for the birds. I get in one early morning ride on the weekends and that's it for now. I'm gonna have some work to do when it cools off but I'm okay with that. In the meantime I'm killing myself in the gym, so my cardio doesn't go to crap. Looks like Sunday has a chance of rain and 97* though! Going golfing though, cycling can wait

Rode on Monday at 5:30 and Tuesday at 6:00. Both PM. The humidity is so low this year that its really not that bad. Acclimate, pre hydrate, and HTFU :p. Amazingly we've had good numbers at all of our evening rides and even with varying levels of fitness we've not had anyone get in trouble with the heat.

i ride here in DFW Still get in 80-100 miles a week, easy rides, and lots of water

pcaldwell 08-02-12 05:21 PM

I've been doing the WNR's, but this past week has kept me inside. Sucks, I've only put 200 miles on my new bike and then the heat arrived. Hopefully ride Sunday. 97 sounds chilly.

akansaskid 08-02-12 05:27 PM

(Wichita) 108 in the middle of my 70-miler on Sat; 111 in the middle of my 65-miler Sunday. After a break inside, I'm good for the first 2 miles, then my skin feels like it's standing next to a fire; finally after maybe 15-20 minutes, I don't feel the sun anymore. 50 SPG Banana Boat (and no burns all summer), stops every 20 miles for liquids and A/C. It's survivable.

I did 82 miles in the OKC area last Saturday. Lots of people out in the morning but mighty few by the time the temps were 100+. I put in short mileage at mid-day during the week & then go longer on the weekends in order to keep myself acclimated to the temps. I want to do the century at Spin Your Wheels on 08/11 and I know that I'm going to be baking by the time I finish. Hoping for temps to be a little more moderate by then.

Made it 15 miles in a 105 degree heat index before my body stopped sweating and my skin got cold... :-) I slowed it down and got home as soon as I could. Tough to keep body temp down in that stuff...

travelerman 08-03-12 04:13 AM

It has been as rough here in Missouri... I tried a couple of times to get out in the afternoon and evenings, but found the 100+ temps too insufferable; I just do not enjoy it when the air is nigh-unbreathable. Been limiting it to early mornings on days off, and very short un-enjoyable excursions after work. Cannot wait for Fall...

andrewclaus 08-03-12 04:54 AM

I just finished a X-C tour and I was crossing the Midwest during the heat wave around July 4. I managed to ride a century on each of two 100+ degree days, but usually limited myself to around 60 or 70 mpd. On the long days, I'd get up predawn and try to ride 40 by 9:00, temps (and dew points) still in the 70s, take a break, and ride another 20 or 30 by noon and then hunker down in A/C comfort (library, cafe, market, repeat) until early evening. Then I'd ride until dark for another 30 or 40 miles. Sleeping would be a big issue--getting into a tent on a 90-degree evening isn't much fun. Luckily I had a good SW breeze during the whole heat wave. I would camp on a hill and pitch the tent facing the breeze, which would make it possible to sleep.

I ride anyway, but I think it's been a bit hotter there than here. Go shorter, go slower, take money to buy drinks or ice cream if needed, use a camelbak, use an ice sock, find shadier routes, wet your jersey down before you start.

The ice sock really helps. I was stunned last sunday when I tried it for the first time. My wife was happy to get rid of some torn nylons too.

It's going to be about 80 F today. I might ride my bike to the beach and go for a swim! (No, I'm not a triathlete.)

hell no, I'm not. start before sunrise, with lights (at least blinkers front & rear).

I'm hitting a MTB trail sunday at 7:00. well, my riding buddies will probably be there more like 7:30, but still. it's not sane to ride in that kind of heat although if you drink a ton of water, eventually you will acclimate to it somewhat. the main way you acclimate is by riding slower.
