Does it make sense for me to upgrade?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

This.

Not usre how the Trek 2.3 is but when I upgraded from my Specialized Allez to a no name chinese carbon bike it was a world of difference, night and day. On long rides the road buzz from the aluminum Allez would kill me, especially my hands and feet! But switching to carbon made such a huge difference. I wasn't tired and beat up after long rides anymore. So if you can swap to a carbon bike and it's within your budget, I'd say got for it.

I still have my Allez but I use it on my trainer or my wife uses it once in a while.

I really like the idea of riding my Trek for a couple of years and than keeping it for a bad weather bike. Maybe I'll spend some money this year on a Garmin 500 and some warm cycling clothes for late fall/winter. Upgrading the chain, and cassetts, and a tune up sound like good ideas too.
