I'm a young guy, so I don't have any sort of attraction to these saddles for nostalgic reasons, but the first saddle I bought for my first bike (a fixed gear commuter) was a Classic San Marco Regal saddle. When I built up my road bike I bought another, but after catching a weight weenie bug.... I wanted to find something a bit lighter than the 300g regal...

I can't seem to do it. I always come back to the Regal and I'm realizing it's silly to try and save a few hundred grams when I like the feel of my retro saddle.

I recently bought a San Marco Aspide Carbon FX saddle and while it feels comfortable for the first 5 miles (kind of like it's cupping my cheeks...), it starts to get uncomfortable after anymore than that and I start to fidgit around trying to find the sweet spot.

I think it's the wide nature of the regal that feels good.

Anyone else use the regal or some other retro style saddle? Any recommendations for more modern saddles with a similar feel?

Retro goes hand-in-hand with weight, doesn't it? Have you tried Specialize Toupe? Best minimalist saddle I ever tried.

I also use a regal on my road bike. I tried to use the new regale, but I just couldn't get comfortable. I really like the long sides of the regal. The sharp sides of modern saddles dig into my inner thighs.

Rounding out my vintage saddle collection I have a concor on my cyclocross bike and an avocet 02 air on my mountain bike.

Just find a modern saddle wide/slim enough for you sit bones.
For me the Fizik Arione works best for me, I have the regular with Ti rails, & the TT2 version & I love them.
I rock the Arione Aliante on my one of my "race/mud/dirt" CX & it works nice too.
A proper fitting saddle wit feel near perfect, no rubbing, or strange pains after/during a long ride.
Pair it with a few nice bibs, & you're golden!

Do the rivets cause any discomfort when you slide back on the saddle, or sit on the end in the drops?
I like the looks of that saddle, & would consider this model on a few of my C,&V bikes.

I've never felt them, and my black one is older and considerably more worn than this one.

Absolutely. Though I've never seen any roadies with them, only on commuters/townies since they're so heavy. Though I've heard they're very very comfy once broken in.

I rode on a leather saddle when I was getting back into the hobby, it was nice but very firm in the beginning.
I used leather conditioners to break it in faster.
Are those Regals made of leather or synthetics?

A lot of roadies use Brooks saddles. Another company that makes saddles that look similar to a Brooks is Selle Anatomica.

I'm a Selle Italia Flite Ti guy myself. My race bike has the TT model on it, which just has never been improved upon, in my opinion.

I don't even know my Brooks is there most of the time, and that is a good thing!

I have three bikes, and all three have (had?) Brooks B17. I recently bought the Selle Anatomica and put it on one bike, and so far that is even more comfortable than the Brooks. Not as much pressure on the nose. Yeah, they may not go well with a modern bike, but comfort is more important.

I'm not sure if I'm a "roadie", but I have a brooks on one of my bikes. They are pretty standard among the randonneuring crowd.

A saddle that works well for you is more than worth the 4-5 ounces you'd save with a lighter saddle.

I like the San Marco Rolls, but it's heavier than your Regal.

If you can find a flite that's slightly padded you're set for life. I have 3 flites and they're all different feeling but similar looking.

Given the shape of that saddle, I think a Fizik Aliante may work. But really, why not lose a 100g of weight and keep the saddle that is comfortable for you.

I have them on two of my bikes, and a Selle San Marco Concor Lite on a third.

I have tried a bunch of modern saddles but always end up going back to a Brooks Professional. After 40 years of cycling I have found nothing close to its comfort. I'll tale the extra 300 grams for th[U]e perfect time giving fit that real leather gives.
BTW, I am a roadie and could care less whether it is cool or not.
