Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Will you be using your stock air intake system for the bicycle power test, or will you go all modified and use a Breathe-right nasal strip?

Question:

Can't you do a reasonable FTP test on a cycle trainer with a well defined power curve? The local tri club uses KK Road Machines and tests with the defined 40 minute warm up (burn out), then the 20 minute test, convert speed over the 20 min to wattage, then 85% for 20 min FTP (it may be 80%, can't remember). LC, are you saying this is a meaningless or inaccurate test?

don't they need to measure the air flow of the intake to give them more data?

No, that is not a gym bike. That is a pretty consistent trainer. The number is 95% though. 20 minute threshold times 0.95 gives you your FTP. Not as accurate as a power meter obviously but it will get you pretty close.

Cool, thanks. I don't trust the wattage numbers on my Tacx Vortex, figured the KK curves were a more reasonable read.

I'll rent my powertap with headunit for $650 and you don't have to return it

I have never used one, but I would think at the price those things go for, having a way to accurately measure wattage should be fairly trivial. Weight and physical size are not an issue. I have no experience with them though.

You are welcome to try for yourself. I have used many of them and none of them are close to realistic. They do give you that warm and fuzzy feeling though thinking that you are going to be able to go out and destroy the pro's when you finally decide to do your first race. It is kind of crushing when you get out in the real world and get dropped in the first three miles of a cat 5 though.

Do they have the dial, so you can dial it up to 400W?

Now that's just mean.

....Funny, but mean.

You think a typical gym stationary bike would even get in the ballpark with wattage numbers? It's a pretty simple measurement to make (unlike mileage/speed) based on RPMs and resistance.

This is what I do. I don't know anyone with a powertap. I test myself periodically at the gym and do my HR/Power ratio as a measure of my fitness during a 5 minute all out. I have a gym membership so it is pretty easy for me to do this every couple of months.

You can't compare the numbers to a powertap, but why not use it to gauge one's fitness over time? As long as you always use the same bike, it should be fairly accurate from one day to the next.
