Good steel < $1500
Hey all. Looking to finally build up a road bike & see what these things
called "gears" are all about. Right now I'm looking at getting a
Pegoretti Palosanto as seen here:
https://www.competitivecyclist.com/za...&PRODUCT.ID=49
While $1500 on gvhbikes.com is a good deal, I'd like to see if anyone
has any other options that might not cost as much.
What I want is a nice steel road frame with a carbon fork so I can build it up
with Ultegra9. The Pegoretti weighs about 3.5lbs and I'd like to stay close to
that weight or under. The goal is a durable bike that will be comfortable on
centuries & tours, but still be nimble enough for the city biking that I mostly do.
Jeff
Also any Pegoretti owners out there I'd love to hear what you think.

Click the Salsa link in my sig. I just built that up with Ultegra 9 for about $1350 including all shipping fees. Please note that I did get the frame used off of eBay but you can get the frame new for less than $200 more than I paid for it from airbomb.com so you would be floating right at your $1500 number. I wouls also look around for deals on Specialized Allez Comp Cromos as I have heard they are very nice as well. This bike is just great, super smooth ride and comes in right at 20 lbs with cages and pedals as shown.
Scroll through the thread to see how the build went and finished photos are on page 2.

Grasschopper: Your Salsa looks unbelievable! Good work on the build. How do you like your ride now that you've had it for awhile?
Also I was looking a Gunnar, but their frames seem to have strange geometry. I'll have to check later "off the clock".

check out the ritchey logic...here are the reviews on roadbikereview: https://www.roadbikereview.com/Road%2...x.aspx#reviews
I have a 54 cm with steel fork...I keep wanting to switch out the fork, but I can't bring myself to do it. It's a great riding bike. I have it set up kind of retro with downtube non indexed shifters, but this bike can keep up with my scandium/carbon bike. If I could do it all over again, I might go with the break away.

You are already at WWW.GVHBIKES.COM
You can get a Viner Steel frame and carbon Fork for under $700. Great Italian framebuilder with a long history with bicycle racing. Not too popular here in the States but well known elsewhere.

Ahh! going to the back or the bake didn't seem to make much sense.
Of course I'm not going to bet my life on specs on a manufacturer's website,
even if the Internet is always true. Always. True.

I CAN'T RESIST DOING IT AGAIN!!!!! somebody stop me.
Steel frame, you ask? I bought on of these 6 months ago, and I love it. It's SMOOOOOOOTH and stiff enough.

https://www.cyclingnews.com/tech.php?...GW/bike_ch1825
The frame, fork, headset and carbon post are $990 US -- just these bits.
Were you looking for a whole bike for under $1500?
My "58cm" (which is actually 57cm c to c, with a 57.5cm top tube) is 1687g (3.7lbs)

Actually, I nearly bought a Bianchi boron frame before I bought the Superprodigy.
They were selling 2003s, brand new for about $800 US, which is really cheap down here.

at one point gvhbikes was selling the Pegoretti for like $2100 or $2200 built up with ultegra - i forget what wheelset.
that looked like a killer midrange steel frame to me. my experience is way limited but i'd bet a bike built around that frame would be lots of fun.

thanks everyone for the tips. right now I'm trying to reconcile the chasm between my desire to own a nice steel ride with S&S couplings for travel and my bank account.
I'm only looking for a frame as I have a wheelset, & parts of the build kit already.

I know that you can buy a brand new Specialized Allez Comp CrMo frame and fork for $550.00 from a dealer...
