Bike thief busted

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That is Awesome. The university police have been planting bait bikes on campus here at Texas A&M. They wait a few days then go to the guy's house and bust him.

They should do a show...like Bait Car. Where they film the thief taking the bike and after riding a few blocks, the chain gives way...or the rear brakes lock up. And then a cable comes out and straps the thief's legs to the bike. Yeah...that would be an awesome show!

Glad the thief was convicted of Class B felony. It's always interesting thieves and their accomplices lie about stuff. A tad dangerous I think running a sting like this because you never know what thieves might have on their person, or who might be lurking around the corner to aid them....though this thief looked like a complete doofus.

Damn.
As much as I want this to be real, it's apparently just an advertisement for that "Burner" app that he "casually" mentioned during the video....which was released just a few days before this video.

I hope that app dies a horrible death now. I really don't like this kind of "marketing."

You're correct. The video states what the felony could be but no conviction. There's a local news followup here:

I read it in one of the comments posted to the video in the OP link. It also said that the people in the video were on the app development team.

I thought it was pretty good/real too, but I will admit that I did think it was strange that he mentioned the "burner" app just out of the blue and said "I couldn't have done all this without it." I actually noticed that while watching it. Once I read that comment, it all made sense.

I also thought the cop was too cooperative, and the girlfriend was too "not-upset." The main guy also seemed a little too "calm" to me. No shaking voice, too confident, etc.

I found an interview with the guy that was just gleaming with praise for the stupid app. He said he was originally going to buy a pre-paid cellphone....and was actually on the way to to the store to buy it when his friend texted him that he could get this great new app for only $1.99!!!!! So if he was going to do this with a prepaid phone, why would he say in the video that he couldn't have done this without burner? Why mention ANY of that in the video?

So I don't have proof or anything, but there are too many red flags for me to just let it go.

Caution -- Not chasing down the criminals will lead to you never getting your stuff back.

Police can only do so much, and if you expect them to handle all of the world's wrongs... You're going to be left severely disappointed.

I remember seing a COPS episode where the police department left a Mercedez Benze bike in front of a liquor store and caught a buch of would be bike theives. It caused quite the discussion between my wife and I about wether it was intrapment or not. I say haul them off to jail, better they get scared then with a bike that does not belong to anyone that have them steel my bike.

It would be easy enough for someone to find out if it's real or not. Is there a police report on it?
