Looking to buy a front wheel
Hey all,
So I been looking at buying a front wheel for my new build. However I only have $350 to spend or just $300. Currently I ride a Mavic Ellipse in the rear and a really cheap state bike co wheel in the front off my old bike. I'm doing a new build and ordered a new frame and full carbon fork. I don't want to run that front wheel as it's bent and heavy as an anchor. I have a few options... 1. Pair it with a Mavic Ellipse front wheel ($230) 2. buy a OEM carbon Chinese made wheel online 60mm with Novatec hub online ($280) 3. Try and find Craigslist deals, deals on forums which I've been doing. What do you all think. I can't afford a Zipp 404, SRAM S60 or a Reynolds. While I would love one of those wheels to run. I wanted a 60mm to assist me with my aero dynamics while training the rest of the summer, fall and winter. I'd be using it all year round. Not sure what to do. All help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
But they are a bit out of price range. Seem like they're good wheels though.

Isn't an ellipse a track wheelset? I don't know first hand, just google it and all the links pointed that way.
You could always go the prowheelbuilder route and have something built up to match, like a Kinlin 270 rim (if Mr. Googles pics are close). And others may disagree, but the Easton EA50's on Nashbar for $200 per set ($160 if you wait for a sale) are a pretty sweet deal. |
Ok, so one reply suggested a $550 wheel when the OP clearly stated a budget of under $350. The next reply suggested a tubular, when a clincher was specifically spec'ed out.
Looking up your Ellipse wheels, they are track wheels and therefore single speed, correct? I think, for $350, or your preferred $300 cap, you should be able to get a really good wheel for your front. In fact, for $350, you could get a whole wheelset and have a backup rear that you could eventually put a full cassette on, if you so chose. Sticking with Mavic, Aksium or Ksyrium can be had @ Nashbar for $329 currently. Bottom line, there are lots of options out there and if you stick with Easton, Shimano, Mavic, etc, you'll have the extra benefit of having a good wheelset that is easily serviced and backed by a good warranty. |

thanks tartan1749, you summed that up well.
I can totally get another Mavic Ellipse in the front. I guess what I wanted to do was get a deep dish carbon used or something so I can have a full carbon front end. 50 or 60cm would be nice. But I can just get another Ellipse.

Actually, I'm wondering if a 50 and 60cm wheel would be good for everyday riding vs the Mavic ellipse or other 30cm wheels. Any help on this?
|
I wouldn't, but I haven't, so I can't say definitively.
|
I'd just buy a 27mm Performance Titan to match the 30 rear and buy a nicer set down the road.
|
Would you go with the Mavic for the front to match for the rear? I was thinking of just doing that.
|
Option 1

"High Performance Wheels You Can Afford" seems like a bit of a stretch .... :o
|
^ lol. I was looking at a easton EA50 or Mavic Ellipse. Which do you think?
