Garmin: EDGE Anything new?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Garmin: EDGE Anything new?

Any news on potential replacements for the Edge 500 and 800? My Sigma is getting long in the tooth and am considering a Garmin replacement.

Edge 800 is less than a year old, I doubt anything more than software and maybe a new color accent. 500, I haven't heard anything new about

Actually the 800 was released in Nov 2010, but thanks anyway.

You remind me of this comic.

What else do you want in a Garmin?

I remember 2010, you could get gas for like $3 a gallon. It was so long ago, but it seems like just yesterday. Those were the days

Nice....except the respondent said less than a year. The comment wasn't intended to come off as being a jacka$$ it was intended to clarify that the 800 is almost 2 years old, and therefore, an update is not inconceivable.

Wifi integration has been one of the talked about improvements, as has potential for improvement in the display itself. I'm sure both the 500 and 800 are excellent units for what they do in their current form....query was intended to ensure that there isn't something emminent on the horizon.

i just switched from a 310xt to an edge 500. Love the edge. If they come out w/something new soon, i'd still be happy w/my purchase.

Also, while this is unlikely (given that the standard is introduced by Garmin)....the introduction of Bluetooth Smart as a transmission protocol, in addition to ANT+, would be welcome. Am currently using a Wahoo BlueHR with my iphone (with Strava), and its been great.

I doubt you see anything new for a while. Garmins new products take a year to work out the problems and then they start thinking about a replacement. Some they don't really replace like the 305

A retina-like display would be total overkill and unnecessarily drive up costs. Wifi or bluetooth would be great!

There are rumors that something may be leaked at Eurobike. Hopefully we get some updates to the pedals at least.

That and two way emergency communications?

is there anybody left who lacks a cell phone... and if there's no cell phone coverage, how would that garmin work? Seems like another dumb wish list item to me.

Cordless charging and cordless data transfer would be awesome. A better CPU would be awesome - the edge 500 is slooooow. I had mine set to auto scroll between screens once and it never once got the elevation profile drawn before changing screens.

I wouldn't mind being able to turn off some of the route screens, or customize them either.

On the whole, I'm very happy with my edge 500 though - it's great at what it does.

I hope Garmin's efforts are more focused on getting the pedals to market, than a new Edge.

Only reason I'd upgrade my 500 at this point is if it pedaled for me! Mine is slow, but not as slow as I am!

I got an email to participate in a questionnaire from Garmin a couple months ago. One of the main points of emphasis was the female plug in my device is expanding, which makes the connection via USB harder, therefore, the use for a wifi or bluetooth connection would be ideal.

So there is a Bluetooth HR. Cool!
Now all we need are Bluetooth speed/cadence sensors, and Bluetooth power meters, and the smartphone will have replaced the Garmin Edge products.

Edited to add: I see there already is a Wahoo speed/cadence device.

I would stay away from Bluetooth Smart. ANT+ just works, but BT HR monitors have been flaky on some blogs that I've read. Plus, with ANT+ you can have a sensor received by multiple receivers - with BT you can't.

Anyway, I'm happy with my 500. If they added ANTFS support I'd be thrilled.

I had a 500 for a long time till the other day when a friend offered to take it off my hands for a good price. I updated to the 800. I like it more, but had I not gotten the excellent trade in... I would never have given up the 500: it rocks that awesomeness Very well.

If the next Edge does wireless data transfer to the PC, it would most likely be via ANT+ just like many of their other products. Within about 30 seconds of me arriving at my front door after a run my Garmin watch uploads the data to my PC automatically. The PC has an ANT+ receiver usb stick plugged in, which came with the watch. The PC then automatically uploads to garmin connect.
