Poll: The Road Cyclists Attitude

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sometimes I lift a finger or four of them, since I taking my hands off the bars would disturb training and/or be dangerous. But I don't think people really see that.

Fwiw I voted for the top 3 options, since it varies depending on mood or who I'm seeing.

Sometimes I wave, but more often I just give them a "Yo, sup" nod.

I've been riding for more than 40 years since college, and back when I used to see one or two cyclists a week, I waved to everybody. On my 9-mile ride for breakfast Saturday morning, I passed (by which I mean "saw," not "dropped") 43 people on bikes. That's almost five per mile, more than one per minute. I might nod, and I always offer help when somebody's broken down, but I'm waved out.

One finger salute with both arms, while doing pelvic thrusts. It's a bit tricky, I won't deny it, but so worth it.

I like to wave at other cyclists.

Unless they're riding an e-bike. *vomit*

It depends on the situation, and my mood. I've waved, nodded, greeted, had full conversations. But one thing I will never do is be one of those elitist asshairs who yells at another cyclist for something really dumb, or make fun of another cyclist because of something trivial like aesthetics.

I find the wave or nod to be very encouraging. I try to make eye contact and wave or nod when I can. If someone is training or obviously concentrating I don't feel bad if they don't return eye contact.

I also thank and say good morning/evening to more recreational riders and people that I pass.

I'd like to change my name but I can't. I do all my recovery rides, grocery shopping, errand running on an ebike while pedalling. So I don't use the car much. I just road in paceline on my road bike at 28mph and dropped a couple dudes also at 33-34mph. Pedalling around a 80lb ebike for 10,000 miles has paid off. Thats a smart savings of $2500+ dollars. By the way, I can leg press over 900lbs.

I'm generally pretty friendly. More head nod than actual waving. But people in my area aren't as polite. So I'm leaning more towards not doing it any longer. Maybe because I'm gaijin.

Is someone on an electric bike a cyclist? Are you even eligible for a #4 vote?

It depends on the route. On routes with a lot of bikes I will ignore other cyclists. On routes without many cyclists everyone gets a wave.

I wave at EVERYONE... and if/when they don't wave back emphatically I take offense and cry myself to sleep that night and for two more for good measure.

am I wrong or are 80% of the answers the same? we have a rule around here, in town no waving, the further up the mountain the more waving. going down the mountain no more waving. see a bent? act like you didn't see the bent. chicks wave at other chicks all the time, but rarely wave at the sticks. riding in snow, the town rule goes out and you wave. ride at night can't see them until it's too late, no wave. I save the finger for the white pickups.

I usually flash gang signs since I'm in a cycling gang.
