Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Inexpensive, but are they crap?

My goal is light, but I also know what my bank account looks like after I pay all my bills so I dont have the ability to drop $70/bottle cage. I dont want to lose a bottle while hitting a bump.

these are inexpensive and by the claimed 19g, they are light.

Any thoughts on these?

I have a free, steel bottle cage and it rattles a bit. Your best bet is check the LBS for something you can try out. You're not going to lose a bottle, but adjustable is good and obviously you want something light. Try to check if it rattles, those sounds can be a bit unnerving

I think you need a full wrap around carbon cage for the bottle not to drop out. I can see the bottle falling out of that very quickly.

Been using them for about a year and haven't had a bottle bounce out yet.

I have some Chinese carbon cages on my bike. Different vendor, and different design, but they've been excellent.

Arundel makes some lower cost nylon cages. If they are like their other cages, you will not loose a bottle.

I've had these on my bike for over 2 years now, also got off ebay I believe for $26 for the pair shipped to my door. You couldn't drop a bottle with these if you tried, they are rock solid, if anything they are a little too tight and have the "potential" to mar the graphics on your bottle, but again I got mine over 2 years ago, they may make them fit even better now. The vendor i used is in the watermark on the image.. probably one of the best value purchases I've made. Shipping isn't exactly quick from these Chinese manufacturers, so if it says 2-4 weeks.. it will be 4 weeks But they are a no-brainer. I'm generalizing here, but I wouldn't be surprised if the "detractors" of these cheap Chinese cages, are people who aren't too happy they went out and spent $80 on a pair of "brand name" cages only to find out the same thing can be had for a third to a quarter of the price on ebay...

Just get the plastic ones from Arundel or Elite. Not sure the weight of Arundel plastic, but Elite are 40 grams claimed. If you can get an online deal, the Blackburn Camber carbon cages are pretty tight and light.

If you are not stuck on carbon, Blackburn has a 23g cage for $15.00. I just picked up two, they work.

I have a couple cages that look exactly like that but from a different vendor on ebay and i haven't had any issues at all. They came from China so it took almost a month to get but i wasn't in a rush for them. A few months from now they'll be two years old and their still in great shape. Haven't had a bottle fall out once.

Call me crazy... but I think saving < 50g on a pair of bottle cages vs. standard glass fiber nylon ones is a bit overkill. I bought a pair of profile design cages a year ago for $5 for both and have had 0 issues. Claimed wait is ~40g each.

I looked at some of those at a sports authority and they were extremely flexible, do you have confidence they wont brake, i'll consider getting some if you like them. Just seemed like they would brake after a couple uses.

I have the Blackburn cages on my bike and they have been fine for 5 months and 3000 miles. I have broken one, but it was not the fault of the cage.

This is what I have. No problems so far. About as light as a cage can get, even a CF cage.

I bought into the carbon fiber craze for my Madone, but to be honest for my application they are worthless. They work great and do their job just fine, but the weight difference means nothing in comparison to the hundred other things you can do to lose weight.

Simply urinating before a bike ride will generate more weight loss than a carbon fiber cage will. Save your money and just get a solid plastic or steel cage that matches your bike well.

The thing is these cages are so cheap that their practically the same as buying a cage at your LBS. Yes it's slightly more but they look a whole hell of a lot better than some plain steel cage. Nothing uglier than a steel cage on a nice road bike. I would never spend $50 on a carbon fiber bottle cage some US based sellers charge, but for $20 for a pair of "carbon" cages from China you really can't go wrong.
