looking for a group ride and new bike routes

Notices
Road Cycling It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle. -- Ernest Hemingway

looking for a group ride and new bike routes

I'm not sure if there's a specifc subforum for this, but I'm starting to really get into cycling, and I was interested in joining a group ride near me. I live in southern california, in the san fenando valley. Also if anyone is around here and knows some good routes, I'm looking for something new. My current route has far too many stop lights, and next to no altitude change. Which is fine for just a relaxing ride, but isn't particularly good for training/improvement. I would go to the beach/pch, but that's about 20 miles from my house, and there's no particularly easy way of getting there without a car.

Also I'm looking for some possible amateur races in the near future just to see how I stand currently. And also some charity events I could do.

The San Fernando Valley Bicycle club has 500 members and we meet every Saturday and Sunday at CSUN. Usually 3 or 4 rides offered Sat. and most of us go short on Sunday. We also have group rides Mondays and Wednesdays at other locations.
Just show up, you don't need to be a member, and pick a group. You can see the schedule on our website.

forgot to mention all rides start at 8:00.

+1 to SFVBC. Good place to start when just starting to learn.

Also, there's Cycling World which hosts shop rides on a regular basis. For intense training, there's
Tuesday Night Worlds at CSUN,
the Simi Ride on Saturday mornings,
Montrose Ride (Saturday mornings) and
the Rose Bowl ride (Tues & Thurs evenings).

There's a host of LaGrange rides throughout the week in West LA/Santa Monica (not too far away).

But, if this...

Then you'll want to work on this...

Which also doesn't seem to make sense with this:

Good point. haha
I was just thinking that I should start climbing somewhere a bit easier. Although I guess I haven't tried going up topanga canyon since I first started, and that was on a full suspension bike.

Thanks everyone for the information!
