Weekend Cycling Ride Reports - September 7/8/9

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Cycling Ride Reports - September 7/8/9

Another weekend is upon us already! Where are you cycling? Do you still have events, or are most of them finished for the season? Are there signs of autumn where you are? Got pics of autumn foliage?

Friday - We are about to set off from the lovely place in Switzerland where we've been staying, and head for France. Cycling today! No trains. We'll be following the Rhone most of the way, so hopefully it won't be too hilly.

Friday - 60.3 km along the Rhone River in Switzerland, all the way to the Switzerland/France border, along the shore of Lake Leman. It was a beautiful, although a bit hazy, day for a ride, and the route was lovely too.

Saturday - 21.75 km along Lake Leman in France. That was a bit hair raising. The bicycle route disappeared as we crossed the border and we were right there in the thick of weekend traffic. But ... warm, sunny day.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I've updated the tour story with the Switzerland Chapter. With a little bit of sadness, we have left Switzerland and are in France. I wasn't at all sure about Switzerland when we first arrived, but became quite attached to the place as we stayed, and we ended up staying a lot longer than I thought we would.
I had a meeting at my construction site on Saturday morning so I could not ride.
I was able to ride Sunday morning with my brother. It was our standard out and back 70 km loop. When we got back, I wanted to ride another mini-loop to get to 100 km.
But, just 10 km out solo, I heard a very distinctive pifft, pifft sound coming from my front wheel and I immediately pulled over before the tire had flatted. I found the shard of glass and pulled it out and the hissing sound continued.
Well, just as I pulling out my spare tube and CO2 pump, a flat bed two truck pulled up and offered me a ride back to my car. I lifted up my bike onto the flat bed area and secured it with a piece of tarmac. As we drove back to my car, he told me that he normally does not take this route and this is the first time that he had ever offered a cyclist a ride. Five minutes later I was loading my bike into my car.
Wow - talking about a good karma day!
I will have to pay if forward soon.
Mark
Friday 18 miles in my neighborhood...Saturday 27 miles in my neighborhood and up and down Lakeshore (Jefferson); great weather but killer wind.
Today will be in the same range; might do my Belle Isle and back trip; we will see.
Sunday - no cycling today. Today was a train day. But there was quite a bit of walking, both yesterday and today.
Well today I decided to finally test out the used Easton tubulars I picked up a few weeks ago. First problem was excessive "wobbly" of the rear cassette. LBS said try riding it so I did. Well, more problems. Seemed to shift ok but something is wrong with the rear hub. When coasting the hub would "catch" and the chain would want to foul up in the RD. So I cut the ride short and came home. That meant only 38 miles today instead of the 50 I had planned. Did not notice anything really that special with the tubulars. They seemed to feel better in fast turns but that was about it. The 38mm wheels did seem to have a spot around 22 mph where all of a sudden it became easy to maintain that pace. That was nice to feel. Will get the wheel checked and then try them again. I did ride hard and fast the past two days so maybe it was a bad time to try out the new wheel set.
Saturday, I planned to do a 90 mile solo ride from home,out to the top of Mt Wachusett and back. Due to the vagaries of bike gps, I ended up getting lost a number of times. I did make it to the top of Mt Wachusett and back home, but my 90 mile ride turned into a 126 mile suffer fest. And I dodged a couple of thunderstorms too.
I've done Mt Wachusett by itself (driving to the ski station and then cycling up). It was hard. It's even harder when you hit it 70 miles into the ride.
Friday-25 miles through mostly neighborhoods and many hills
Saturday- pretty much the same
Sunday-40 miles in 77 degree/sunny weather. Fall was in the air and the leaves were starting to fall. Best ride I have had in a while. Unfortunately, this is about as much riding as I can squeeze in with a 3 yr old, 2 yr old, and 4 month old.
40-ish miles...I rode to the Formula 1 track they're building east of town. I had ridden out there last year about this time and they were just breaking ground. From my view, I don't see how they'll be ready for the race in 9 weeks...it looks so un-finished (which it is)...but everything seems to be a go.
It an ugly ride out to there...the pavement has a lot of cracks, the shoulders range from small to non-existent and the cars go fast. fortunately, it was a pleasant morning weather-wise which made up for the lack of scenery.
This shot is from the back-side of the main grandstand building.
Went to do a 50 mile group ride with the local club but only the group leader and myself showed up. So we did a nice 2 man ride, turns out he is a PBP vet so I learned a lot on that ride about distance riding and local roads and attractions. Good day!
