Sram Red Black Shifers and the Yaw Front D

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sram Red Black Shifers and the Yaw Front D

so I took my CAAD in to the lbs to have the yaw FD installed. mechanic said no worries, it will work fine to shift the chain up and down, but without the new ergonomic Red shifters, the new FD won't work as intended. I think he's wrong.

Who is correct? will the Red Yaw FD in fact "yaw" without the new 2013 shifters?

Officially, he's right. The new FD "needs" the new shifters. In reality, at least according to every review I've seen, the old shifters work fine with it. As far as the "will it yaw" bit, yes. The yaw is part of the motion of the FD. If the cable is pulls, then it "yaws."

It will work fine. You will just have a trim position that is not needed. With the new levers its tap up and tap down. Very fast.

I've been using older red shifters with new Yaw fd and works great it is compatable 100% no chain rub in any gear
Shifts better quicker and quiter than original red fd

Posted this before awhile back good info on compatibility of new and old Sram Red parts.

Here is an article Velo News did It works! We test SRAM Red backwards compatibility that reviews on compatibility with different parts

Also if he can't get it to do as it should he does not know how to set it up!
THe Yaw actions is built into the FD nothing to do with levers travel is the same only the new levers don't have a trim click so you can not use new levers with old Red FD thats for sure.

Let's say if you need trim you won't have it but you can still use the combo but I'd have to say Y LOL if one is going to buy the new levers why would you not get the new FD?

I'm looking to do the same thing. Only thing stopping me is that I need the clamp on style. Every online retailer only shows the braze on style. The SRAM online install instructions state that there is a clamp you can use but they don't say if that COMES with every FD or will I have to pony up at least another $30 for that too???

You are correct Sram has only made the new FD in a Braze-on but they made a Clamp specific to the new FD which is an additional $30-$35

I never use the trim position on old Red or Force FDs either. (Force FD > old Red FD) The only rub I get is when cross chained in the big ring and biggest cog, which indicates it's time to shift to the small ring. I now have Yaw FD which works great with the old Red rings and even better with the new Red crank using old Red shifters.

Get the one designed for Sram also.

+1 - Yes with the old setup the only time you should need trim is cross chained but you really shouldn't be in that combo to start with, but if you do the new Yaw FD will not rub.

I don't believe so. I just ordered one and if you specify "SRAM Red Braze On Adapter front derailleur clamp black With Chain spotter" into Google vs just "SRAM front derailleur clamp" you'll notice that they look a little different. Unfortunately the price is pretty different also. smh

yeah, thanks. I found one on Backcountry.com and pulled the trigger.

incidently, I returned my new Red Black Shifters and exchanged them for the new Ergo Shifters. They should be in soon, and then I'll get the lbs to install the shifters, FD and clamp. Hope they'll be nice. I've heard the new 2012 shifters feel really good.

The only thing 2012 on mine will be the FD and the clamp. All the rest is the original Red. I've studied SRAMs installation video like a hawk so I'm hoping I can do the work my self. Save some $$ and the headache of having to coerce my shop into mixing the different Reds.

Good luck man!

Well I got the new Yaw FD and installed it my self. It was a little tedious but not the hardest thing I've ever done. After about 50 miles of testing it works great. No chain rub in any cog combination. The chain catcher has only had to come in to play once and I'm glad it was there.

Glad you got it set up. Most important thing I read is that the guide marks for installation on the FD are only to be used in the first installation, not subsequent adjustments. Mine is working great too, but I did return my Red Black and got the Red Ergo shifters. They are really cool. Glad you're liking yours too!!
