Need some ideas on gruppo direction for '03 Colnago Dream Lux Mapei

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Need some ideas on gruppo direction for '03 Colnago Dream Lux Mapei

I acquired the 'nago for a very good price, possibly because of its mixture of hubs (Campy NR, Dura ace), crank & BB (FSA), brakes (Cane Creek), front D (Sowa), rear D (Campy NR), brake & shifters (Campy 9 sp), wheels (Colnago branded Ambrosia Excellence tbq & ?), stem (Ritchey), headset (AH). Hoskar (well used) saddle on carbon in an Al frame with Star Carbon fork. Frame has its share of chipped paint but all, in all, a good looking ride. No idea of the bars (embossed area not readable). I'm no retro dude, but I did put the correct Colnago ITM stem back on.

Campy rear hub needs new bearings, so I swapped in a temp wheel till I figure out what to do. So my initial thought was to piece it back to what I suspect it might have been (all Campy NR with Ambrosia wheels). Then I got to looking at the Dura Ace gruppo's of the early "aughts" and I thought..danged sweet. I can go 9 or 10 speed on the shifter rebuild but my instinct is to stay 9 speed and stay all Italian. It stays as my Saturday morning 50 mile road bike. What say you 41s?

Athena, I'm up with that polished look on my non-ferrous & plastic retro roadie. If I just add Ti and c moly I'd have the periodic table covered.

Here's a slightly better pic. Built during the era of anything clear coat carbon and black must be cool. Seat and bars are fugly as well. Don't know brand of bars but they've an odd mark like a TTT. Black tape makes them look heavy and obnoxious. I'll probably go white seat and white bar tape (original Colnago tape was a light blue, I've a few NOS rolls). Front wheel is (likely) original Ambrosia. Rear is temp. I've been through the "Hot or Not" forum looking for ideas. I'm not convinced all black Gruppo is a good thing looks wise and I'm real partial to polished Al (crank/BB, brakes, brifters, deraileurs) and leave the black at stem, forks, seat post and wheels.

The frame's gonna take some TLC...

My thoughts too. I've got a white Regal (and white bar tape and cable housing as well) on my '87 Centurion Ironman, and it looks right.
