Road Cycling or Motorcycling: Your Choice?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Generally I ride my bicycle for a couple of hours daily. If the cagers miss me I'll ride another 30-60 mins on my motorcycle. It's only fair. I'm a moving target.

My bike (motorcycle) is in the garage, hasn't been ridden in several years and hasn't been licensed or insured for that time either. I should just sell it. I would much rather have the bicycle...it keeps me young and I feel so much better after riding a bike than a motorcycle.

Really, we can only have ONE? I suppose if it really came push to shove, I would choose the bicycle. But it would be a sad existence!

I miss motorcycles A LOT!!! I dropped riding on the street because of how dangerous it was. I always pushed my limits on the street and saw to many bad things or potential bad things. Went to the track and had a blast. Riding on the track is SO much more fun and SO much safer as well. After I had my daughter I decided to give it up though because it was so dang expensive. Not that cycling isn't, but the expense really only continues for me because I have an addiciton to always wanting to upgrade this or that. I never liked having to pay to ride. even if it wasn't on the track and just out in the country for a sunday ride you would have $40-$60 in gas that day. I love my cycling now and am totally content, but my ears always raise like a dog when I hear a souped up crotch rocket in the distance.

This week I'm about to do some track riding on the motorcycle. Went to check tyres, oil etc and found spider web on the front wheel!
And it's summer, motorcycling season. So for me, it's bicycle. Why?

1) It's a bit better excercise (though fast cornering takes some fitness).
2) It's more relaxed. I can be a bit sleepy, have a beer, use ANY shortcut, not worry about police, red lights etc.
3) I'm not cold when riding bicycle in the winter. Pedals keep you warm.
4) It is cheaper, A LOT.

People don't ride motorcycles in the rain because it is not fun. Slippery pavement is very risky for cornering, so you have to ride slow... and 90% of motorcycle fun is leaning in corners. That's why you don't see motorcycles, not because they will melt.

Motorcycle is fast, fun. It makes it possible to do a 1000 km trip in a day with no problems.

This is smart. I saw a motorcycle duo ground up on the Mass Turnpike recently. You take your chances and when it happens - you generally don't come away clean at higher speeds.

I was off the bike for a while for a back injury and know how that feels. But motorcycling is like a drug for me. Not sure I could do without it. I sold my car, but not selling the motorcycle.

A lot of the road riding skills I picked up from riding a motorcycle I also use in cycling. For example, when I come to an intersection and see a car crossing the intersection to my right, I first look at the drivers face to see if they are looking at me then look at the front wheel and see if it is turning even slightly. I will slow down or stop if I see the front wheel turning even a little bit.

I dropped a motorcycle on a freeway interchange once and broke my thumb. I hit some broken safety glass on a turn and the bike went out from under me. I quit riding for a few years and then bought a Harley and never had even a close call until I sold the bike after 16 years. I ride very defensive and I do the same on a bicycle.

Motorcycles are fun, but I prefer my sports car/road bike setup. If I lived in an urban area, or a city not accomodating to cycling, i'd probably get a motorcycle or motor scooter.

I know these are both modes of transport but the two feel nothing alike. I myself prefer cycling. More enjoyable/fun, green, healthy, rewarding, and most of all because to me it is a sport as well as a way of getting from A to B.

I love motorcycles but made a choice late last year. Yes, there can be life altering moments on bicycles but I find the stakes to be higher on motorcycles because of the speed. I will say again, I love motorcycles but decided the risk was greater than the reward and the I believe the exhileration aka reward to be high. It just takes one pull out. Yes we can get run down on our road bikes. I limit my time greatly on roads with higher speed limits on my road bike and try to keep to mostly cycling specific venues. So I sold my motorcycle. Miss it greatly. Won't say whether I won't buy another. I am trying hard not to as it is in my blood. I believe I can account for 99% of the idiots who drive cars out on the road. My concern is the 1% who slips through. A life altering moment...most know someone and many times the motorcyclists fault....would change my life forever for my bigger love which is for cycling. To me, that is too big a risk...at least for today. To those that own motorbikes you are my brothers and to those that own both, I clearly get it and why you do what you do. I just don't want to get my body messed up so I can't do what I like the most. I trust myself and many don't who would never own a motorcycle. I however don't trust the one incompetent or drunk driver on the road that may take me out.

Most insane sporting event in the world. 239 fatalities to date. Worth noting that Cavendish is from the Isle of Man.

Put the headphones on for this video.

I love anything mechanical; but motorcycles just aren't for me. I've fallen from my bike onto my (helmeted) head at 30 mph - there's no way I'm going to try that at 60 mph.

I've never ridden a motorcycle.

Would love to give it a go, though.

This very question is something that's been eating at me this entire riding season. I have a ten year old steel framed road bike that I ride all the time. I also have a Vespa 250 that I use for my daily commute and a mid to late '90's Felt RXC pro that I've adapted for commuting, so my motorcycle has seen comparatively little use. The sad thing is that it's a brand new Tiger 800 that I've had less than a year. I've ridden sport bikes all my life, except for time off taken after my daughter was first born. Motorcycles are addictive but they don't make a whole lot of sense. Even a very utilitarian bike like my Tiger is still pretty specialized. As daily riders, the Vespa and Felt are at least as useful as the Tiger and more pleasant to ride, and the Tiger is a GREAT bike.

So, the thought that's been going through my mind as I ride my road bike is selling the Triumph and using the funds for a new road bike. I still can't bring myself to sell the Triumph but it's probably just a matter of a couple of years before it's gone. In the meantime, I'm going to start test riding new road bikes this week to see if there's anything I'm truly missing.

Going down on a motorcycle sucks much more than dropping a bicycle. An average road bike weights probably 15 -25 lbs. My Harley weighed 618 without gasonline or oil. Having a motorcycle fall on you and then burn your leg with a hot engine and exhaust pipe isn't much fun.
