Bontrager Wheels (Rims)

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bontrager Wheels (Rims)

Kid/salesguy at bike shop the other day (paraphrasing): "Bontrager rims are not very good, not very strong, I can tear them up in one ride...[proceeds on unintelligble rant about the lacing pattern and flat bladed spokes] .... I am majoring in physics so I should know..." Obviously, this guy was not a Bontrager dealer.

I was under the impression that Bontrager rims are actually quite good. In fact, based on personal experience, my current and previous bike both had the mid-level Bontrager Race wheels, and after their first truing I have not had to worry about them one bit, even on tough Texas roads. I'm 170 lbs and do b.t. 60-100 miles/wk.

Discuss.

I was at my lbs and asked him about bontranger wheels he had on a higher end bike (the one he actually rides to work with) and he commented that they are quite nice, though the bladed spokes probably dont make any difference we would notice. The radial lacing pattern works fine. Lets face it your not going off drops with these wheels, and the quality of material is so very high.

Please explain, being an Ali G. fan I thought I knew weed slang (I don't indulge either) pretty good.

I have Bontrager wheels and they are absolutely bomb proof. In the last 16 months, they have worked perfectly with 15,000 miles to date. Still true and smooth and I have just beat them to death. I have hit rocks, potholes and other road hazards with no problems. The kid just doesn't know what he is talking about.

Whaddya mean? The guy above asked me if I was offered a bong hit, I replied no, and mentioned that Towlie just appeals to me for other reasons. Towlie is a pot-smoking towel on Southpark.

I have Bontrager Selects on my ride and to paraphrase Oak Park Biker, I've also found them to be bomb proof. I'm not a lightweight rider and I've taken them on all sorts of terrain without any problems. I'd have no problems recommending them to anyone. The LBS kid's an idiot.

Hehe, okay. Not familiar with the Towlie character. I thought "a towlie" was some kind of slang.

just don`t use metal tyre levers with them- the alloy is quite soft and damages quite easily

Yeah, they suck that's why LA and the Postal squad race them.

What a moron.

I have Bonty Race wheels and they're nice so far...until I upgrade to Race X Lite's.

Could you elaborate on this a little? I have a pair of these (Race Lites) coming soon.

And I don't care about the 'cool-factor' of more exotic/less popular wheelsets, nor do I care about how ubiquitous Bontrager gear is.

Just looking for opinions RE: performance, weight, durability, etc. thanks

(But maybe you're kidding. Once said you "hated" Lemonds and then listed the Lemonds you own... hmm)

I'm kidding - I love them. I have a set of Race Lites on my commuter - good solid performer. I stripped all the decals off when one started to peel - now they are solid black. Nice.

I have Race Lights on my Lemond and I love them. I'm no lightweight either at 215 lbs. I'm also a bit hard on them as not all our roads around here are stellar!

Same here. The Race Lites that came on my Zurich are very nice wheels. I'm back up to 230lbs, and they have never given me one problem.
