Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Recommend a tire?

I have a mountain (XC) bike, but 60-70% of the riding it sees is road, so it dawned upon me that maybe knobbies are not the best thing for that, and i can switch out tires when i go offroad. So what is a good tire that will fit my 26" wheels. Clincher tires, i was looking at these Ritchey slicks that are 1.4", any suggestions? comments welcome

Depends on that your rims can handle as they can go as thin as 1" (continental something). They were a bit expensive though as I remember. I got some 1.25 Geax Street Runner for 20 bucks each.

My rims are Sun 0 degree lite, i think thats 20 or 22mm wide. They are cross country rims so i know they are not fat.

IMO moving from my original slicks-1.25 slick did not make me necessarily go any faster (knobbies to slicks did though).

Go with something cheap (I have absolutely no complaints with the Geax), get some slime and you should be good to go.

If faster is really the goal then I'd start looking at a road bike .

Hi,
my old XO2 came with Ritchey Tom Slicks in 1.4. Thought I'd try the 1" and go faster, but the ride really deteriorated. So I put them
back on. It's a fine tire.

specialized fatboys are not bad (1.25 inch wide and 100 psi)

I like Continental Town and Country's. They ride well on pavement and gravel tow paths etc.

I have some Bontrager 1.6 semi-knobbies. They do well in general, even in moderate snow, and they're much faster and smoother than the 2.1 knobbies I used to have. I got the pair for less than $20 total.

Among Houston bike messengers, the Tom Slick seems to be the favorite. Low rolling resistance, durable, tough, cheap.
