Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tips on a new bike.

Hey I'm looking to get a road bike. I have wanted to make the switch from mountain bike to road bike for some time now, but just never committed. But now I'm moving from Pittsburgh to SLO, CA and I want to get a road bike and I don't want to buy it out west because I know it will cost me more. I've got about a month before I leave. I'm trying to spend as little as possible which I know isn't a good philosophy. Doing my shopping on Craigslist. Just want to know what I should be looking for. I'm 6'2" and lanky, long arms and long legs.

not going to do much better than that for $100 without checking craigslist incessantly and being really quick with the email.

I bought two bikes with 105/rsx brifters for $100 this summer, but they sold in a matter of minutes.

I understand that. Still going to need money. A decent tire is $50 these days.

I'd get this if I were you. He'll probably take $200, dunno about $100 tho. I would want to swap brake levers and saddle ASAP, so budget for that.

You can commute on Zaffiros + Mr. Tuffy. $45 for a bike's worth.

I get by with Forte Stradas when I'm poor. Usually $10 a tire.

You definitely need to post in Classic & Vintage. Some guys there might be able to hook you up w/ something. Just don't expect much at that price.

HOLY COW! This is your bike right here. Bummer is no front wheel so you can't try before buy unless you have a friend with a front wheel you can borrow.

Bianchi $15

Those blue bikes might be too large IMO. I would buy the bike in CA, a place with a huge bicycling culture where bikes, parts, and bicycle co-ops are plentiful.

Huh? The guy is 6'2", not 5'10"! Somewhere around 62 cm frame. Those bikes are in that ballpark, but he ultimately needs to make that decision. There are lots of opportunities to buy used bikes in bicycle hotspots (e.g., Portland, Seattle, most of Cali, college towns), but it's a well known fact that they sell for more and quickly. It's simple: supply and demand!

It looks like this might be the bike I'm getting. Talked the guy down a little bit. Just need his final conformation.

The bike the OP linked looked pretty damn good to me. But at 6'2" I suspect 59 cm to be on the small side.

I dont think you need much more money. If you are picking up road cycling as a hobby and sport, then agreed, get ready to burn some cash whether you want to or not. But if you just want an old but decent road bike to get to and from work, then 100-200 might do it. I have several "vintage" steel bikes that fall into that price category. One of them I use to go to work almost everyday, and it is from 1986. Actually had less maintenance in the past few years than my "modern" roadbike.

That Paris Sport is OK but you should really treat yourself to that Bianchi.
