Haleakala 10/8/12

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Just got back from a week in Maui and did Haleakala twice. First day saw only one other rider on the mountain, second day 4 or 5.

Good luck with finding a riding partner, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Also, the climb is soooo long that you're gonna need to find another rider with VERY similar ability... Even a small difference in W/kg is going to result in a significant gap over the course of that climb.

You will see more people going down then up, I did it with my dad when I was there, got passed once, passed another group. Took us around 6 hours up and what seemed like 6 minutes down. But tons of people get carted up to see the sunrise and ride down on bmx and mtn bikes.

While you're there doing the climb, consider going up the next day or so by car and visiting the crater and even doing a hike there. That's another adventure. Not many people who ride would consider this, but that visit is good too. If you're going with others and they don't particularly do rides, this would be a great alternative activity.

We did the hike maui thing, and hiked up the side of Haleakala over by Hana... It was pretty amazing.

The crater is amazing. I've done one overnight, cloudy and super quiet the whole time. Will be arriving on Maui on Tuesday the 9th but can't imagine myself doing a 30+ mile climb anyways. Have a great ride!

Good luck and be sure and post back. If you have time and are looking for somewhere else to ride, the West Maui Loop is awesome also.

Nice report reft. I did stop at what I believe was the kula marketplace on the way down, as I was wet and freezing, they had coffee, pop, water, snacks. A nice cup of kona coffee warmed me up to allow the rest of the trip down. Have you done the west maui loop? It is awesome also.

Have fun!! I did it 4 years ago but couldn't ride down because of torrential rain. Going back in March, so hopefully I get to ride down this time.

I was hoping this was going to be a pic thread. Everyone that climbs it usually have (has?) great pics that make me realize I'm not riding hard enough.

Good luck btw. And have fun

Would love to do this ride someday. Don't know when that will possibly be, but really want to do it.
