Love it when I guess right

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Love it when I guess right

The bike has been making a 'tick' sound at times during the pedal stroke. Not all the time. Not always in the same conditions. Slightly annoying.

So, I put a bit of thought into it and tried to isolate it. Tested things like: in saddle and out of saddle, focus on one leg or the other, different cadences, leaning the bike either side - and so on.

Usually there are any number of possible causes. Folks often think it must be the crank, but more often than not it is something silly like the seatpost, rear quick release and so on.

I guessed pedals. Took them off, cleaned threads, added new grease and slapped them back on.

I love it when I guess right!

Were the pedals loose to begin with?

No, not loose. Took some effort to get them off (about normal effort).

Excellent. Happens so rarely, the moment must be savored.

BTW can you even ride your bike safely in Hong Kong?? I would think traffic would be murder, both literally and figuratively.

pedel grease and skewer tightness is the two things you always check first when someone is complaining about their crank clicking.

Can you ride safely in HK?

Well, I've been here 6 years and I'm not dead yet. I even commute to work - but most folks do think I'm nuts.

I think the discussion in A&S about odd regional driving behaviours sums it up. HK drivers are bad in certain way, but once you know what to expect you can live with it. You do pick your training times and locations, but overall it is safe enough.

Drivers here have poor 'road-craft', but are not aggressive.
