Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

best place to buy garmin edge 500? concerned about warranty.

i want to pick up a garmin edge 500 but i'm a cheapskate. i don't want to buy retail. prices on ebay seem lowest especially shipped from taiwan but i'm concerned about warranty coverage. Amazon has good prices and the 3rd party sellers tempt me since i can avoid paying sales tax.

where would you buy a garmin?

Purchased my old 305 from an ebay seller.... Garmin didn't have any problem helping me. Sent me a new HR monitor and didn't even ask me to bother shipping the old one back.

I bought my edge 500 from some dude in Wisconsin on ebay - unopened, got it for 219 (the package retails for 350). I was able to register it on Garmin's site with no trouble so I can't imagine I'd have warranty issues.

I guess that makes me more of a cheapskate than a worrywart.

Also shopping deal on 500. FULLY read item description. One Ebay seller even specifically stated Taiwan only wty. If in doubt ask seller if covered by mfg's wty. I have just about decided to stick to USA seller for such an expensive item. Liking mfg's refurbished with full year mfg's wty.

I love my Edge 500, but they aren't the most reliable device so you are smart to be concerned with the warrant.

The buttons on mine gave up a couple months after I bought it in February; Garmin honored the warranty but I did need to send the receipt. It took a couple of weeks to turn it around.

You won't find many deals on Edge 500's that have the warranty so you if you are going to pay full retail, buy from someplace like REI since they will often give you a replacement on-the-spot instead of making you mail it in.

hm, REI sounds like the best choice. Sounds a heck of a lot like getting a lifetime warranty.

I was in the same boat as you. I wanted to buy from my LBS, but the price was so much cheaper online. I finally decided to talk to the local shop about it and they matched the online price! They told me if I find something cheaper online to always check and see if they can match. If they can even get close I always spend my money there. They matched a price from ProBikeKit by the way. They would not match an independent seller on ebay.

REI rocks. Had an older hiking garmin that died. Went in asking how to get it serviced and was actually planning to pay for the repair. They swapped me out for a new model. Nearly forced it on me actually. I told them it was old and it would be abusing the 100% satisfaction thing. They said it wasn't even close to what some people do. Walked out with a new one.

True, but the coupon doesn't work on GPS or bikes unfortunately.

EDIT: fyi...

"Discounts not valid on bikes, hardshell boats, stand-up paddleboards, any item with GPS technology, personal locator beacons, avalanche airbag packs, skis, ski boots or ski bindings; snowboards, snowboard boots or snowboard bindings."

gps r us on ebay. I purchased my 500 from them with heart rate monitor and gsc10 for under $300. https://stores.ebay.com/GPS-ARE-US__W...4.l1513&_pgn=2
My gsc 10 quit 8 mos after I bought it. Garmin replaced it no problem. The second one I purchased from another vender on ebay also died while the first unit was in route to me. One phone call and a second one was on the way. They didnt even ask me to send it in this time.
