Sea Gull Century (Oct 6 2012)

Anyone doing the Sea Gull this year?

How do you handle the logistics? I'm thinking of driving down from central MD at about 3:00am, arriving at 6:00am, for the 7:00am start. Or - will there be a traffic problem, with 5,000 people descending on the venue at the same time?

I'll be wearing my BikeForums.com Fifty+ jersey

Traffic is not a big deal until you get near the venue and even then it's not horrible. Great ride. Enjoy it. Hope it isn't windy. Watch that big hill going onto Assateague ;)
I grew up in/near Cumberland. You do the Garrett Co. Gran Fondo? Great albeit tough ride.

A bunch of folks from my club are going.

Sadly, I will not be among them.

Weather looks good for now....ride safe.

I remember that we traded posts about the Garrett County Gran Fondo. I chickened out again this year, but might do it next year. A cycling buddy of mine did the double, and said it was a killer - and he's a good climber, whereas I am not :( ... though I suspect I'll make it up that Asseteague mountain

There's also a new Frederick County Gran Fondo National Championship that I ought to ride in 2 weeks time. It's right in my town, but I won't be able to make it. Perhaps in 2013.

Anyway - I'll be pushing for a time well under 6 hours on the Sea Gull - and plan to start on the dot of 7:00am, and stay ahead of the crowds.

I'm going there too. Its my 3rd time there. Wrt logistics, I usually book a hotel within a 30 min drive from there. That's just to conserve my energy and have some sleep before the ride. Hope the weather cooperates.

It's way easier to get into Salisbury from the east, so you should've driven around on the bypass and entered from that side.

But you could've joined some other DCRand folk who were doing an overnight 200k that starts on Kent Island and ends in Salisbury; they rested after for a couple hours and then did Sea Gull.

That DCR event would have been interesting - hope it runs again next year.

How was today's ride? I skipped this in favor of another charity ride that's scheduled for tomorrow in Limerick, PA. But sadly, weather forecast tomorrow isn't looking good. Besides a rain event, temps don't go up to the 60s. :(

I'll plan for the Seagull Century 2013.

The weather was perfect. From what I'm told, there have been worse headwinds in some previous years - but they were still tough. The crowd on the Asseteague route was very dense until the first stop (which I blew by) - and then it thinned out nicely. All-in-all, a nice ride. There were a few velo teams riding pacelines of 20 and more - I joined some of them, and they seemed to be very disciplined.

Wow, I last rode that in 1992 I think. I had a good day, finishing in 5:07

I got a late start, since I drove down from north of Philly that morning. I still made it to all the rest stops before they closed. Unfortunately I also got caught in the torrential downpour at the end of the ride, but it was still good overall. If someone wants to do a flat century, this is a great choice.
