Currently im riding a 06 katmandu with a single speed hub conversion its an xs frame and is about 34lbs. I actually went 100km in a day on it but now I FEEL THE NEED FOR SPEED. How much faster and longer, easy to climb hills should I find a road bike. Any suggestions on a brand that makes a good xs frame road bike

This is my first year riding a road bike and here is what I experienced. For the past three years I rode an old late 90's mtb. The thing weighed about 35-40lbs. While riding that I would average 15mph on the flats. I would do rides of about 15-40 miles in length on my mtb. This year I finally bought myself a road bike and on my road bike I average about 20mph on the flats and with less effort. As for distance I the farthest I have ridden on the road bike is 50 miles, but thats due to time constraints and not ability. Of course this is just my recent experience and the results will be different for each person.

The best way to figure this out for yourself would be to take a long test ride on a road bike or to rent one for a weekend.

An entry level road bike can weigh just over 1/2 of what your riding now. Many people will say its the engine not the bike but IMHO that kind of weight loss, thinner tires and multiple gears will make you faster and climbing hills easier.

Just prior to buying a roadie I was riding a 33lb Mtn bike. Where if I was lucky to keep a 10-13 mph avg, I can easily do 17-20mph on my roadie.

Your question is almost impossible to answer other than to say you will be faster. The responses are a reflection of the question.

I'm 2-3mph faster on my road bike than mtn bike at a similar HR. How much faster you'll be is unknown. Far too many factors in play to guess.

I was riding along with my roadie buddies on my hartail MTB with slicks on it for a while before I bought my first road bike. Everyone told me how much easier it was to go faster on a road bike. Initially, I was surprised at how small the difference seemed. I was pretty strong from riding my heavy hardtail, plus the different pedaling position on the road bike had me using some different muscles. Eventually, yes I did become quite a bit faster and certainly rode farther. But in the beginning of changing over the different wasn't as much as I anticipated it would be. BTW, now I can hammer those same roadie buddies where before I just tried to hang...

At first you will feel like your flying and barely using any energy, you'll be a superhero. but after 6-7 rides it will become the new norm and the novelty will wear off. then you'll be asking how much faster 21mm tires and a 53 tooth crank will make you. the most simple answer to your question is "faster"??

I started out on a hardtail mtb, and switched to a roadbike. i never looked back. The difference to me was that i could now hang with a group vs. riding solo.

Yes, you will go faster.

Longer is really up to you but I'd hazard a guess at yes.

Climbing will be easier as most road bikes are lighter than most MTB. Also, tha handling and road are more tuned to road so the entire experience will be different.

As my pappy used to say, "Use the right tool for the job."

I used to commute 22-27 miles one way using both a road bike and a mountain bike mostly on a MUP and smooth roads with few hills. I averaged 4 mph faster on the road bike

the following advantages will make a difference in your cruising speed and climbing..
low weight
more aero riding position
wide range of gearing allows you to standardize your cadence and power output over a variety of terrain
clipless pedals

at risk of stirring up an old argument, i would suggest wearing cycling bibs/shorts and jersey

all of the above will make you more comfortable on the bike, which translates to conservation of energy in relation to riding the heavy upright bike, which leads to longer rides.

MTBs can be fast on flats and descents,were you'll notice a big difference is on hills,the steeper the better.When i stand and climb on my 15# felt,I am accelerating up hills instead of just climbing.The sensation of flying up hills comes to mind

What the hell did you expect? A percentage of increased efficiency over a mountain bike? We have no idea of your general fitness, nor your ability to HTFU. All that can be said is yes, indeed, road bikes are faster on the road.

There is a baseline of effort needed to get a classically geared double ring road bike up hills though. A 39/25 isn't low enough for some. Go with a compact or a triple if you're just switching over.
