Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Cycling Ride Reports - October 13/14

Middle of October ... is everyone still out cycling regularly? Tell us about your rides this weekend ... are you still participating in events? Riding with friends and family? Going for a long solo ride? Got autumn or spring cycling pics?

Friday - more walking. We've been doing a lot of that lately.

Today will likely be walking as well, but we might get the bicycles out. It has been cool and rainy here in Plymouth, UK.

I was going to ride today, but it was 23 degrees, so I ran, and spent the rest of the morning blowing out the sprinkler system instead. Tomorrow I am going for a charity ride at UMass Amherst with my daughter, who only rides her bike to get around town with her friends (other than this yearly ride). It is short and I ride my recumbent. I am usually the only 'bent there, among a bunch of college kids (and professors) on big box mountain bikes and old "ten speeds". There are always a few folks in spandex on high-end bikes, but I don't want to be one of them on an 18 mile ride.

Saturday - I rode on my usual training loop around Souvarnabhumi airport with my brother. The weather was perfect when I started my ride at 645 am - 78 F, slightly foggy and thus no sun, and no wind. I rode 100 km in 3 hr 15 without any rest stops. I did a quick sprint up to 50 kmh and achieved a 32 kmh ave over an hour today. The temperature warmed up to 90 F by 900 am and I drank 3.3 L of drink mix and had some dates while riding. I think I am finding out that continuous riding is better because of less lactic acid build up during with no rest stops.

Sunday - I woke at 530 am to see rain so I went back to bed. But, later in the afternoon, I rode a short, fast 42 km loop in 1 hr 20 min until the sun set at 6 pm. Here, this close to the equator, there is no twilight - it goes from sunset to dark in about 15 minutes.

Mark

Biking season is just beginning here in the Phoenix area

I did the Tour de Scottsdale this morning:
https://app.strava.com/rides/25019927

This was my first organized ride since I did el Tour de Mesa back in April. But then, I had only been biking a few months, and my training wasn't nearly as organized as it has been since.

I figured I'd go under 4 hours, secretly hoped to be around 3:30, but heck, I'm still in shock with my final time. For most rides, I typically hold 18.5 to 19 mph, take a look through my Strava history. When I first saw some mile splits on my Garmin, I thought, "well this is the initial rush, it will fade." Only it didn't. Evidently I found a pack of guys my speed and we stuck together nearly the whole time.

Scenery was also amazing. North Scottsdale has some great preserves, and going down Dynamite/Rio Verde there's awesome views of Four Peaks. Only thing missing would have been to time going through Fountain Hills when the fountain was going off

October 27- we have 206k, 317k, and 400k RUSA brevets.
November 17- we have 211k, 308k, 403k, and 600k RUSA brevets. I am actually hosting this ride. It's one of our flatter routes, but typically windy.

And we'll be riding RUSA Permanents in between, typically 200k rides.

This time of year, weather is iffy. Yesterday, we were able to ride in shorts and jerseys most of the day, and had to wait out a brief rainstorm late in the night about 20 miles from the finish.

Here I am at the 108 mile control. If I look about whupped, it's because I felt that way, too. We had headwinds going out, and this was pretty much the point where we got out of headwinds and into crosswinds and tailwinds. It wasn't hot, but it was humid, and so I was pretty well soaked in sweat, then we hit rain just a few miles outside of Clifton here. And that's Sharon, my stoker, looking fresh as a daisy.

Upper midwest reporting weather just dry enough to ride some trails 40+ miles at a decent pace Saturday. Beat serious rain, hail and lightening by 10 minutes. Sunday saw some serious weather, so played and coached hockey for a few hours. Also did my off-season weight work, complete with squats and upper body and core workouts.

Friday- 70 degrees, leaves changing, 50 miles or so with 4500 feet of climbing
Saturday-25 miles weather the same
Sunday-75 degrees a little more overcast, went out doing some climbs as I have recently gotten on Strava, so I tried to get some KOM's for fun. This is the best time of year to cycle here in Birmingham.

Rode Saturday morning, 30 miles, 34 degrees F; coldest ride so far this Fall but wasn't too bad. 30 miles Sunday morning, 47 degrees. I will be riding all thru Winter (except for ice, rain, and snow) my usual Sat/Sun rides, using bad weather days as rest days. No temperature limit for me; I'll be ready for the low teens

Still nice weather here, about 20 degree warmer than last weekend at around 80°F and breezy. 21 miles on Saturday, none on Sunday due to random blowout while loading up for a ride and being unsuccessful at patching the tube.

The little stray off the Greenline path at High Point Terrace is where the festivities were for the Greenline MUP's 2-year anniversary.
