Good deal?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Good deal?

I am looking at replacing my road bike which was destroyed in a car accident (I was driving the car with my bike on the bike rack and was rear-ended). I went to my local shop and checked out a few bikes today. I've narrowed my selection down to 3 choices. They all fit me just fine.

1.)I can get a 2012 caad10 105 which the shop rented out for the last year for $1100. It was in good shape - some nicks here and there, but it rode pretty well and seemed like a good deal. My budget is around $1700 - so I figured I could buy the bike and get a nice set of wheels and stay within the budget.

2.)Or I can get a new caad10 for about $1600.

3.) Or I can convince the wife that I should spend a little extra and get a supersix 4 rival for about $2300.

I am leaning towards the used CAAD10 right now. I know it was a rental - but it has been maintained by the shop and looks to be in good shape.

Which one should I choose?

I'd be tempted to go 2) although 1) doesn't sound bad, it's not a screaming deal IMO. What would the situation be with a warranty on 1)?

PS as a fellow CAAD10 owner, you'll love that bike. A great frame.

With number 1 I would have lifetime service from the shop and the warranty is still good on the frame.

It would depend on how much abuse the rental bike has to me. I got a new CAAD 10 Rival for $1700.00, with a complete fit, all future tune ups free included. I would work on that price first and go from there. I love my CAAD 10 and ride it daily with pleasure but, I think the SuperSix might be even better if you could get that one with the Wife's permission. Let us know what you decide.

if your old bike was a Cannondale as well, contact the sales rep for your area - Crash Replacement.

Nice looking bike, but I want to support my local shop. They have been really helpful with the crash and helped submit an estimate to the ins company.

Components can always be upgraded. I should say components SHOULD always be upgraded. Get the frame that fits, and you would want to build your rides around.

I will guarantee you in a few years it won't matter if you spent an extra $400 on the bike. It will ultimately be pennies a ride average. Get the best frame you can find. That's the prescription
