a colnago SLX ???
 

ebay has a colnago that claims that it is an SLX frame the decal is missing (suspicious) but the frame is stamped SLX by the serial (more suspicious) how would colnago know the decal was going to wear off . did colnago ever make a slx frame or is this just a super or a cx mix .... http://www.ebay.com/itm/190739635395...84.m1555.l2649

I have never seen a stamp stating the tubing material ever, is the stamp under the chrome

for $51 can't really go wrong if you're interested in it.

From the Colnago catlaog, it looks like it was available with SLX tubing.

I remember they had the checkerboard paint before the art décor came out. Colnago did make SLXs during the 80s, it was the model below the Master, and given the curved forks 1986 is a reasonable guess. That said, Colnago never stamped the dropouts with the frame material nor a serial number. If it's real (and I think it is) then those are post-manufacture.

well how about that I was guessing it was a spray paint special but I like that color better than the pink

To check for Columbus SLX tubing, you can look into the bottom bracket shell (best done if you remove the spindle, bearing and cup on at least one side of the BB, of course) to see if there is "rifiling" in the down tube and seat tube tubing ends going into the BB shell. The SLX tubing is known for this helical reinforcement that kinda looks like rifling in a gun barrel. If it does not have the "rifling" it is not Colombus SLX....

I would put this frame well over a mexico frame

If you zoom way in on that picture linked above it looks as if the dropout is stamped with something on both the top and the bottom. The problem is that its so blurry its pretty hard to tell if it is actually something stamped or some weird reflections from something off camera. Other then that it looks pretty spot on. And if you look up the 86' there is no white feathered outline around Colnago like the 88'.


EDIT: Just found this picture, the person says its an 88' but that is pretty dang spot on to the ebay sale.

its really close except the 88 bike the clubs are white while the frame and blue one they are black

You are generally right, for preceding years. As the Super was being phased out they brought the Superissimo in as the natural evolution. It's questionable whether SLX is really better than SL (which is what I think the Super is made from). From what I remember SLX is stiffer but heavier so if you're a climber you'd be better on a Super.

As for being better than a Mexico, yes it would be by some margin, the Mexicos came before the Supers. In terms of resale value, though, it's probably inverse, like a Ferrari from the 60s is worth more than one from the 70s despite being a slower car.

so did they only use the SLX tubing for just the one year or is that what the masters are made from also
