Ride suggestion for fall in Virginia

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ride suggestion for fall in Virginia

I'm currently in Richmond, but I've got a day off this weekend and the weather is going to be perfect, so I was thinking I'd like to drive out west towards the Shenandoah Valley/Skyline Drive area and go for a ~60-70 mile ride to enjoy the fall colors (with a camera in my jersey pocket for good measure) and get in some serious climbing before it gets cold. If anyone has any must-see routes they can suggest or any particularly scenic turnouts I should hit, I'm all ears.

Can't claim it's must-see, but the 'classic' route around here (C'ville) is to go up one of the gaps, ride the parkway/skyline drive, and go down the next gap. eg, start in Crozet, take 810 + a few local roads to Smith Run Gap, ride Skyline Drive, down via 250/Afton, stop at Chiles Orchard for apple doughnuts, and head back in to Crozet. Probably more like 90 miles, maybe only 80.

Other suggestions: park at one of the breweries below Wintergreen, ride up Reed's Gap, south to the next one (forget the name, goes past Crabtree Falls), and back to the brewery where you get to relax and pretend the climbing didn't hurt.

The Vesuvius climb is great (other side from Crabtree Falls).

The skyline is sick nice, just get the right gearing because if you cant climb it might hurt a little bit. Just remember is not a race and go to your own pace because some sections are like 2 to 4 miles long and if you cant climb it takes forever hehe

You really only need two gears: UP and DOWN. ;-)

I second the Skyline Drive/Blue Ridge Parkway suggestions. Great road, low speed limits, beautiful scenery.

I live in Warrenton - about 30 miles from the Skyline Drive - and spend a lot of time up in the Shenandoah National Park and drive a lot on the SD (haven't biked it yet, believe it or not). The weather this weekend is supposed to be beautiful and the leaves will probably be at or near peak color up there. The cyclists, motorcyclists, and cars will be up there in droves. There is likely to be a long line to get into the Park and traffic jams (literally) and lots and lots of people entering and exiting the overlooks. Be careful!

Fiancee had to borrow my car while hers was in the shop last Sunday, so I ended up riding 60 miles outside Richmond on some roads that were new to me. Shame, especially because the weather won't be that perfect again for a while. Oh well!
