I've got a CraigsList scammer contacting me now. Not sure if I want to bother messing with her.
I am renting a horse stall in my barn. The scammer must not pay close attention to the ads, because they are interested in my item for sale and will arrange to have it picked up. Good luck picking up a barn :D Bring a really big truck. |
have a little fun with them

Yes, I agree that the key to Craigslist is selling stuff that are really not expensive. I'll sell my used saddle, stem, handlebar etc there, but I'll list my CAAD 10 frame on eBay. Reluctantly, I have come to develop some antipathy towards eBay, for the simple reason of the ridiculous amount to list effectively, and also because they own PayPal, a company I have come to loathe, because of their holding up your money to benefit from floats.
I have bought a number of items on eBay over the years, but have never actually sold anything. I just started selling stuff on CL this year and it has been a great success for me. I sold a brand new Nikon DSLR for $500 earlier this year, an older DLP movie projector, a pair of barely-used Nike Shox shoes, and gave away a broken LCD HDTV. It all works out pretty well as long as you can meet up in a "neutral" location with plenty of people around. So these days if I want to sell something, CL is going to be my choice. I also browsed CL for road bikes for several weeks before deciding to buy new from a shop. |
I just checked the Memphis CL and in the photography/video section and there were 15 ads posted between today and Sept 9th.
The bike section seems to get between 20 - 50 posts per day on average. Toronto CL photography section gets approximately 125 - 150 posts per day. Toronto bike section has over 500 ads posted since Friday. Have some fun, take a few pictures of your bike and post it on Toronto CL for what you paid for it including tax (that way no real people will contact you) and I guarantee you will receive responses from scammers. |

That's interesting. My brother has sold tons of stuff on eBay and CL, and after having a really bad experience with PP holding up his money, he now only sells high dollar stuff (mostly musical instruments and production equipment) locally on CL for cash money.

They only hold funds, to new accounts with little feedback. Especially selling high ticket items. They lift the hold after a review, Once feedbacks has been recieved with no open cases, and proof of deliveries. Just buyers protection in effect.
I have heard of many, many such stories from eBay/PP sellers. It's like they're totally one-sided with the buyers and have little to no protection for sellers from these dis-honest buyers. |

And I know what I am talking about regarding their "making money off you on floats", as I worked as a banker for over twelve years, albeit as an investment banker. Interest payment on funds never stop for even a second, so the time they hold your money up means they are collecting interest payment on those funds. And I know this is common practice in banking. Common, but dishonest and unethical, if you ask me. |
Well, they did a hold on my account back in December of 2011 when they started noticing I was selling quite a bit, and pulling payment as soon as I received it. They sent me an email saying they would hold my funds until review, after the review they havent held my money since.

Now I keep funds in there anyway until the product is delivered. Just in case I get a dispute. Knock on wood I never had any.
