OP's injuries were caused by crashing his bike. In addition to the hazard itself, among the factors potentially involved are his speed and direction, his attentiveness to approaching road hazards, his prior knowledge of road hazards, in the case that the hazard was obscured his judgement in approaching an obscured hazard, his bike handling and recovery skills, and the prior condition of his bicycle.
Additionally to these, there could be unreported factors (such as traffic conditions and weather) which may or may not have been partially under the individuals control or reactions to mitigate the danger.

There's just not much there to put any faith in. I didn't assume that you thought this would make you popular, just figured you need attention. The details either don't make sense or seem contrived. For instance...
- you were commuting to work on a Sunday early in the morning
- luckily for you, even though it's early Sunday morning there is a witness who saw it all & gave you a written statement
- somehow you know that the drain was damaged the night before the accident and suggest that you were the first person to stumble upon it, yet you say you called the police the day of the accident & then the next day you post details that the police told you that someone else had an accident on this same grating 30 minutes before you did.
- your phone was damaged in the accident so you are unable to take pics of the site of the accident or the damage to your bike... still.
- you're traveling 20mph at the bottom of a hill and hit what sounds like an open grating yet you miraculously land 2 feet to the right, on the grass and are unscathed, but your phone landed on pavement and broke
- you come to this forum to post details of what sounds on the surface like a horrific accident, yet prior to posting those details you decide to respond to an innocuous thread about Green Cyclery.
- the city fixes the grating on a Sunday and the Town Hall handles your claim within 15 minutes of opening on a Monday morning without seeing your bike or pictures of the damage & you're in your office posting details by 8:44am
I find this all very entertaining that's all. Can't wait to see the pics.
p.s. I'll bet your bike is already fixed so there's nothing to photograph. Just a hunch.

Dave you have put way too much effort and energy into this... I feel sorry for you. What's the point of trying to disprove my thread? Its almost as bad as making a fake thread for attention.

His phone broke during the incident, so he doesn't have pics of when it happened. Who cares.

I don't particularly care, but your logic is somewhat flawed. If the "incident" is in question then maybe there is no broken phone either. There was a witness, I would have asked to use their phone knowing that pics will be useful at some point. He's probably got a camera at home too so would be easy to get a pic of the bike. On the other hand, if someone wanted to fake a broken phone or damaged bike that would be easy enough too given all the photos on the web so without pics it still could have happend and with pics it could still be a farce.

How does one flip over the bars with an iPhone in their jersey pocket and not have a broken phone as a result lol. On the bright side I have an excuse to buy the new iPhone. ill post pics when I can, the damage is pretty spectacular and I agree this thread is useless without pics.

sorry, but days later and you don't have any access to a digital camera or cell phone. I have to agree on the BS call.

Please always wear a helmet. I ruined one, I was going very slow getting off the road to sit in the shade a bit and drink. Hit a rut and I would never have believed I could fall so fast and hard. Took off the helmet, and foam pieces fell everywhere. Had to put them back in to ride home. BUT, helmet did it's job, sore shoulder, but no headache, did not see starts, no memory loss.
