Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Found this on Craiglist..what do you guys think?

I'm looking to buy my first road bike. Is this a good price? And also, is it a good bike? I'm new to cycling and I want to get into it without you know, dropping $1500 on a bike.

Yes I'm a student.

Seems decent...more importantly, will it fit? That's a big frame.

An used aluminum bike with Sora (i.e. lowest level) components - $1500 is waaaaay too much.

You can get a brand new bike at that level for $900.

^ didn't read (or click). Yes, that'd be a solid starter bike for you if it fits. I really like the classic look. Seems hardly used.

I completely agree

However, by clicking the link, and realizing that the seller wants $295, I would totally jump on it.

Here's a breakdown of some of the components cost on Amazon and it shows it's a fair value:

Shifters $114
Front Derailluer $7
Rear Derailluer $21
Cassette $25
Wheelset/tires $175

Total $342

That isn't including the frame, handlebars, stem, seat, and other misc. parts.

In all, if you were to buy an older bike and build it up that way, you would be in it for much, much more.

Let us know how it rides!

What material is the fork? Doesn't look like carbon... if it's steel it's ok, but if it's aluminum you better change it.

I'd jump on that. That is a beautiful bike. Perfect for a student. Just don't use it to commute to class...it will get stolen. Don't worry about it being a perfect fit. As long as it's in the ballpark and the standover is good (meaning you don't smash your sack) it will be fine. I'm kind of jealous because I've been looking for a backup N+1 steel/AL bike and that one is sweet.
